Really?  Can you cite this medical evidence please as my fat cells certainly don't seem to have got this particular memo ...

The OP will not be successful with ANY surgery until she gets her emotional eating under control with therapy and recommending revisions to people who are not ready,  will only ensure they fail at their next surgery too!   Even the VSG and DS can be eaten around by determined people ...

Yes, currently somewhat controlled by 1500mg metformin per day); 49 (gulp!) and I had gestational diabetes, not well controlled by insulin, when I was 40 - a year before surgery.

I have 3 type I diabetics and 3 type II diabetics in my family (besides me).

I believe (no research to back this up) that RNY may put you into remission but I do NOT believe it is a cure (obviously not for me!) The DS seems to have a much better record ...

I am 8 years post RNY and was diagnosed with type II diabetes last year, despite being a normal weight, exercising faithfully and looking after myself.   Sometimes it's just a case of genetics!!!

You should not have been prescribed an injectable without instruction - sheesh!   It would have taken someone 10 minutes to give you instructions and what not to do's ...

Kelly has had no medical training and so is probably unable to answer a question like this - I don't think she even does her own injections!   If you just post a general question, one of the myriad of trained nurses and medical staff on here will be able to help you better!

You have your opinion - I have mine ... Like KimS, I like to give advice based on my experience of living successfully with RNY for the last 7.5 years.

If you are happy to have had major surgery to alter your digestive system and still feel a need to go on diets from time to time, good luck to you. That's not the life I chose for myself.

Choosing to live a healthy lifestyle (for life) was the reason I had this surgery - you do whatever YOU think you need to do to rock your VSG! I like to encourage people who have had RNY to live their lives as functionally as possible.

Oh, and "thanks"!

Kim S has given you excellent advice - please don't do any silly fad diets like the "5 day pouch test" it's really not necessary to go back to the pre-surgery diet mentality - we altered our digestive systems to get away from these ideas!!!

If you follow the guidelines Kim gave you, you will be able to lose the weight you have gained and maintain for life!!!!

Tell them only as much as you are happy with them sharing with other people.   It's not good to expect them to keep secrets or to lie and they do tend to blurt stuff at this age.

They should be great helpers at this age - fetching and carrying, helping to prepare their own food, even running a vacuum cleaner over etc - I'd make the most of it if I were you - my 11 month old was useless in the helping department !!!

I still dump on fats and sugar and have to limit processed and white carbs - or I fall into a carb coma!  I have also developed type II diabetes in the last year.

I had a BMI of 40 with 100lbs to lose to achieve a normal BMI.   I initially lost 120lbs in just under 7 months.   I regained the 20lbs in years 4 and 5 and have maintained the 100lb loss since.

I do work at it, but am very happy to be where I am today ...

I think you are misinformed - there is NO WLS that allows you to eat everything and anything without impunity.

I'm with Hala, if this is a weight loss challenge, then you could eat bon bons and stand at the back of the class and you will probably lose more weight than them!!!

The whole point of WLS is to make losing weight easier ...

Great questions, Anne!

My surgeon had a pamphlet when I saw him for the first time listing all the extra expenses involved with having WLS :

Plastic surgery - very few people seem to factor that particular one into their thoughts - and most of us HAVE to pay out of pocket - I certainly did because as a lightweight the skin wasn't enough for medical necessity - I am definitely a vanity project!

Gym memberships, gym clothes, running shoes etc - these can run into hundreds of dollars if you want to look cute (and you will)

Whether you are drinking protein shakes or eating the best quality protein - once you can eat more than two bites of something - the necessary protein (80-100gms per day) IS going to cost you - as will vitamins - and these things really are non-negotiable!

My plastic surgeon recommended silicone ointment after I had my TT.   It cost $70 something dollars for a couple of grams in Singapore but might be cheaper here.

They usually tell you to schedule 6 hours or so but in reality, 4 is usually enough for me ... This method also seems to be the best for sustained levels too!

I have been having them annually for several years and they do nothing but IMPROVE the way I feel - I hope it goes the same way for you!

Having now reached menopause, I'm really hoping that they become an infrequent necessity or even unnecessary (has to be some good reason for going through the rest of the PITA symptoms) - we'll see ...

I lived in Asia, post RNY, and have visited all those places regularly - they are very westernized cities and you will have no problem finding good protein sources.

I loved Taipei although I was definitely seen as a freak - 6ft 3" in my heels and blonde - people would literally stop and stare at me LOL!!! Very friendly though - had lots of help with the language where necessary!

I hope you have a great time!

I'm a midwife and that's a load of rubbish!   Don't be pushed into having a c-section unless your OB gives you an EXCELLENT reason why you need one!

I honestly don't get why anyone thinks we are so precious after WLS - sheesh ...

Poet Kelly has NO medical or nutritional training - she is the queen of Google - that's all! She knows no more than you can find out for yourself!

She certainly has never had any midwifery or obstetric training and I don't believe she has had a pregnancy after WLS!

You might not like the delivery, but there are lots of people on here with a LOT more knowledge and experience ...

Make sure you don't burn any bridges that you might need later on!

Topic: RE: Is Protien shakes enough?
I agree with you that it is wholly possible to survive on liquid nutrition - however, there is a point where for a person that is NOT sick, surviving on protein shakes is not functional - either bodily or socially!

In the early stages of WLS I don't see a problem with it, but I do believe it is necessary for us to eat solid food as soon as we are physically able. If someone believes they are unable to tolerate solids and there is no medical reason why, then I believe a visit to a psychologist is necessary ...
