No, you don't need to apologize to anyone.   Did it hurt them that you've been overweight?

And except for my immediate family and a few close friends, i have kept it private.

You have missed your calling, Nicolle!  lol

For all the grief we get for "pushing" the DS, it is SO worth it.  Every time I sneak a peppermint or /gasp dare to eat a sandwich, I thank the universe itself for not having to fear dumping.

Pre-ops, take the time to research.  Take the time to educate yourself. Take the time to fight your insurance, or, if you have to, take the time to save up to self pay. The DS is THE ABSOLUTE BEST decision you can make for your health-physical and mental!

Topic: RE: X-Post: Goal! with pictures!
Finally!  I've been flirting with 139 forEVER, then today, BOOM 2 pounds gone. I've lost 116 pounds, and over 100 inches in the past 10 1/2 months.  Obesity has been my life long prison.  Now, I finally feel free!

     The Good:
    -My blood pressure is n-o-r-m-a-l!  106/62.  Pre-op, I was running 150/100-Stroke territory
-I can breathe.  Because of my previous tummy tuck, I carried my weight in my upper abdomen.  That bulk compressed my lungs and any kind of exertion left me breathless.  This limited my activity so much that I was practically a hermit.
-I can eat now.. lol. The first 6 months, eating was VERY frustrating.  Two bites and done.  Carbs wreaked havoc on my gut.  Any kind of carbs.  Bread, fruit, veggies, rice, potatoes, sugar.. you name it, it was a MESS!  Now, not so much.  Only sugar gives me awful diarrhea.  I can eat carbs if I have room left after my protein, and I don't really worry about gas or potty issues
-My measurements have changed as follows:
Chest Before-51 inches                        Chest After: 36 inches
Waist Before-  49 inches                       Waist After:  30 inches
Hips Before-     52 inches                      Hips After:   35 inches (translation:  NO ass!)
Thigh Before-   28 inches                      Thigh After: 18 inches
Arm Before-     18 inches                       Arm After:   12.5 inches
Calf Before-     19 inches                        Calf After:   13.25 inches
Neck Before-    16.5 inches                    Neck After:   12.25 inches

    The Bad:
    -Shopping is expensive!

I've never reached a weight goal I have set for myself.  Always 20-30 pounds short.  Having made it here is unreal to me.  Pinch me, seriously!

Topic: RE: Before Surgery - Scared?!?
We call that a "two week freak" around here.  The finality of going under the knife and altering your body can be overwhelming.  I think we all worry about being in the small percent that don't make it out alive from surgery.

I reconciled this by knowing that what I was doing before my DS couldn't really be classified as living anyway.  It was existing.  It was waking up in the morning in pain, never looking in the mirror as I got ready for work and going to bed praying I would wake up.

I don't know how old your kids are, but if they're old enough to understand that you're doing this so you can be a pain in the ass to them for many many more years, then put it to them that way.  If they're young, give them just the basics and make sure they know that no matter what happens, you love them.

    Good Luck!

Topic: RE: Reality Check.....don't type with crashed blood sugar
I have to agree with you.  Having been diagnosed with an eating disorder during my last failed attempt at keeping 135 weight loss from coming back, the fear of food is something I could not ever get back to. I work with a counselor still, not as frequently, but that was a big reason I chose the DS.  I didn't, and couldn't be afraid to eat again.  That's just nuts!

Wow, Jenna...lol.  Your hubby is hilarious!

I had one of these the other day.  (in addition to the snarky "Stop losing weight because I don't want you to be smaller than me" comment).

I was waiting for the elevator, just chit chatting with an IT guy.  All of a sudden this other dude walks up and this conversation ensues:

Other Dude:  How much weight have you lost?
    Me:  a bit..
Other Dude:  A bit?  More like a TON!
IT guy:  I'm sure its less than a ton.
Other dude:  You're not going to tell us?
    Me:  Gotta keep you guessing!
Other dude:  Its time for a new wardrobe!  (this in, and of itself was a bit backhanded.  What's wrong with my current wardrobe??)
Me:  Got no money for that.  (Should have asked if he was offering to foot the bill)
Me:  That's ok, though.  I can wear my daughter's clothes now!

It was quite an elevator conversation.  Nothing like being put on the spot..lol

Topic: RE: Lets discuss the duodenal Switch!
Hi Jessy!  You're such a positive person, I smile just seeing your avi.  And then, I read your posts and smile some more because of the maturity and courage you have at such a young age.  I was probably still sucking my thumb in a corner when I was 17!

How has the DS changed my life?  Nine months ago tomorrow, I was 253 pounds. I'm 5' 3", and that was not my highest-that was 293 pounds in 1997.  I had lost 135 pounds on my own back then, developed some serious disordered eating (or not eating) behaviors and exercised every day till I almost passed out.  But alas, that couldn't continue indefinitely, so I regained 100 pounds after 7 years.  When I was down around 160, I had an extended anchor cut tummy tuck. Pretty aggressive and forward thinking for 1999.  But here I was, 42 years old, 253 pounds and so immobile due to dyspnea that everyday activities would leave me breathless.  I had high blood pressure, and a road map for an early date with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Since my DS, I've lost 110 pounds.  I've gone from a size 24 to a size 8 (!).  Me?  An 8?  I've been obese since I was a child.  I've never had a normal BMI.  And all that was hard to swallow.  It took me a long time to get the nerve up to buy the 8's, and now they're loose.  you know what that means?  ACK!

So anyway, I'm 5 pounds from goal, 2 pounds from a normal BMI.  But more importantly, I can live without adjusting my life and choices because of my obesity.  I can move, and walk up the stairs.  The escalator was broken today at the train station, and I easily walked up the stairs.  But as i did, i wondered what I would have done pre-op.  I would have walked a long way out of my way to find an elevator.  There was no other choice.   i can clean the damn house without stopping every 5 minutes!  i can go out with my 21 year old daughter and we can shop til SHE drops!  And we can share clothes.

For some perspective, here are my "Oh my GOD, these are size 8's!" pics.

Love love love my DS! It has saved my life!  Even if I was alive, I wasn't living.

    Congratulations!

I think you need to talk to both your OB/GYN and your bariatric surgeon to plan a course of action.  I think you can get enough nutrition but its going to take work on your part.  If they think you can't, there's always the option of a feeding tube (I'm just guessing here).  And I wouldn't worry about goal right now.  You'll get there after the baby is born.

Take care of yourself AND the baby-kins

Topic: RE: No one has noticed...a little bummed
You need to stop looking for pats on the back.  You didn't do this for the accolades, you did it for your health.  Yes, some people don't comment.  Some don't notice.  What i think is the people that don't notice, didn't judge you on your weight in the first place.  I've lost 90 pounds.  From a size 24 to a 12.  I KNOW that its noticeable.  But I don't welcome comments in every situation.  Especially at work.  As far as family goes, if someone says something, I say thanks, now lets talk about something else.  If someone doesn't, that's fine too.  I am not my weight loss or my weight.  i am me.  And I have other interests besides having the surgery and losing weight.  It gets old for other people.

Don't be discouraged.  Whether they notice or not, whether they comment or not, you're still losing weight and getting healthier.

140 pounds in 6 months is an incredible amount of weight. And yes, it slows down but you'll still keep losing! Did your doctor and research really lead you to believe that you'd lose 200 pounds in 6 months?  I know we all want to get there, but why can't you enjoy how far you've come?  You must feel incredibly different from when you started.  Mercy!  Enjoy your new freedom of movement and your smaller clothes.

If you've come this far this soon, you'll get there.  No need to get mad, just enjoy it.

What if you don't have the VSG and keep gaining weight and co-morbidities?  What if you could have taken this chance and gotten the weight off before you developed diabetes (or worsening diabetes)?  Or high blood pressure (or increasing high blood pressure)?

That scared me more than the other stuff.  Bring it on.  The pain, food, the restriction, the vitamins, the follow-up.  I would have given my right arm to not be petrified I was going to die in my sleep one night, suffocated under my own weight.

Topic: RE: mother's day sadness.. need support.
I'm sorry you're feeling this way.  Let me share something with you that has helped me a lot.  And its something I only started doing recently.

A few years ago, when my children were in their mid teens, I was waxing nostalgic about a time in my life when my children were younger.  Specifically, they were pre-K age.  I was thinking about how fun it was to get up with them, make them breakfas****ch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on USA while I fixed my daughter's hair, and waited for the school bus to come pick up my son. I was feeling like since they had grown and were so self sufficient and didn't need me as much now, I missed being needed.  But then it dawned on me that I didn't even enjoy that time when they were younger since I was preoccupied with what ELSE had to get done for the day.  I was worried about the bills, the snow, the dinner, the mess in the kitchen, or whatever! I really had wished I HAD appreciated that little time with them more, because it was wonderful.  At that point, I had a revelation that I didn't realize how happy I really was then.  So I decided, from that moment forward, to enjoy TODAY.  Whatever that is.  Not what I wish today would be, not what I was longing for and missing, but for what it IS.  Right now.

I know you're missing your husband and your family (I was a single mom, btw.  Still am, and the kids are 20 and 21 years old now).  I know everywhere you look you see moms and dads and husbands and kids and wi**** was you.  I know the depression and bipolar is exacerbating things for you right now.  But there ARE other moms who are hangin' with the toddler today solo, too.  Somewhere.  Maybe not at Walmart, or at dinner.  But somewhere.

Enjoy him.  Don't fight it and try to get him to behave and stuff.  Get on the floor and fingerpaint.  Take him to the park and wear him out.  Make him special mac and cheese or whatever.  That's what he'll remember, even in a two year old way.

My 21 year old couldn't come home from college this weekend.  I didn't want to guilt her into coming, either.  Yeah, it tugged at my heart a little bit, but you know what?  I raised a strong, independent and very capable young lady who has stuff to do for school and it wasn't realistic for her to come home.    She called first thing this morning and we talked for an hour.  And instead of recalling that she wasn't HERE, I enjoyed that moment.  And that made my Mother's day a HUGE success.

Chin up, sweetie.  Go play and I hope tomorrow you will feel better.

I had the restless arms for one night about a week post op.  I completely understand the feeling about wanting to rip your arms off and throw them at the wall.  I ended up stretching them above my head as much as I could to get the creepy feeling to lessen.  It was only one night, and I don't know that I was deficient in anything, but I feel for you..  man, that was some weird stuff.
