Topic: RE: BARIATRIC SURGERY WITH MEDICAID
I'm in California and except for the psych clearance, I was covered 100%. Only took 6 days for approval but my surgeons office had a 10 month medicaid, here its medi cal, waiting list.  No 6 month nutrition visit just two yrs of medical records, a seminar where you meet a surgeon, one support group meeting, one nutritionist meeting, and a psych clearance. Then its submitted for approval.  I have a medi cal HMO and the medical director actually does the approval.

But I am prepared to stall so ill be ok when it happens..well maybe....lol

Topic: RE: who is 6 weeks out???
Its not really that fast to me...lol..In the first two weeks I lost 18 pounds, but now my loss so far is 3 pounds a week..my dr is happy with a one pound a week loss, so they said I'm above average, though I dont feel that way..lol... I was averaging 600 to 700 calories a week, but at my 6 wk check up the dr upped it to 800 so I wasnt in starvation mode. I have yet to ever wake up and see a big loss..its always one pound at a time, but as long as I'm dropping weight, I'm ok with that...well sort of....I'm impatient...lol

    Topic: RE: So upset...
I have hypothyroidism and my surgery is on Monday..they did recheck my levels on my preops and I was a bit high at 4.85, but I am already on levothyroxine so i was cleared for surgery..I have tested at a high 9 before, so they probably want you to be on medication first.

Topic: RE: Really Need to Vent to People Who Understand...
In all my years of seeing my pcps, two different ones, not one time have they ever mentioned my weight. I went in one day and said, I want to see a dietician because I've been struggling to lose weight... and then I was referred to one.  I went to monthly classes, and when nothing changed, I went back to my pcp and inquired about wls..she refererred me to a bariatric surgeon for a consultation and that was that.  I always found it odd that they never commented on my weight, but I guess it beats being made to feel like a child who did something wrong...good luck on your journey and rant away..lol

Which test did you have? I have hypothyroidism and for the T4 free test I've always been within normal range at 1.1, but the other test, the TSH w/reflex to FT4  I test in the 3's now, anything below 4.5 is considered normal by my dr, but I take 112mg of levothyroxine to be there....at my worst I was a high 9 on that test

    Topic: RE: Phsych eval tomorrow?
Yeah I did that too...they had us take it at the first seminar and they put it in a sealed envelope to take to the psych doctor... so wanted to open it and see what else was inside...lol

    Topic: RE: Phsych eval tomorrow?
It should be ok...lots of questions about the surgery and your expectations to make sure you understand the commitment involved in it...I was on depression medication when I saw my psych and I was still cleared for surgery...They did touch on my background, but its more about if  you will be able to comply to all the restrictions of a wls surgery

    Topic: RE: coumadin and wls
I started my wls journey on April 1st of last year...to be honest I had everything done and submitted to insurance within two weeks and it only took about six days to get approved.... every insurance is different on what they require...For approval I had to go to a drs talk, is which where you meet one of the surgeons and they explain the preocedure and risks, then I had to have psych clearance, take a nutrition class and attend one support group meeting ...then it was submitted to insurance....

But unfortunately when I went to schedule my surgery there was an 11 month wait because I have medi-cal which is medicaid in other states and they only do a few surgeries a month...so I am not the norm..but in my case it worked out because due to my clot, any surgery I scheduled last year or even the beginning of this year, would have been canceled.  My pcp said as long as ultrasound showed a clot in my leg, I couldn't have my bypass....fortunately in January, it was gone..and now its almost time :)

    Topic: RE: coumadin and wls
My bariatric surgeon did say if blood clotting was still an issue, that they would put in a filter of some sort..but in my case it was from knee surgery so I don't need one..just the extra lovenox shots for home...they automatically administer blood thinners while in the hospital as a precaution

    Topic: RE: coumadin and wls
I just got over a blood clot and was taken off coumidin on Feb 9th... surgery is March 12th ...but the plan is to send me home with 10 days of lovenox shots just to be safe. I thought I might still be on daily coumidin when I had surgery and the doctors office said being on coumidin wouldn't cancel my surgery..yes i would have to go off it before surgery, but it wasn't a denial for surgery.  But having a clot still in my leg was....thankfully it went away completely when they checked it in January....good luck to you :)

Topic: RE: Newbie and need some help !!!
That I dont know...I'm having rny and it was covered.  In fact it has been so long since it was approved that my authorization expired. The doctors office had to resubmit it.  Its like waiting all over again and it sucks!!  But the insurance coordinator told me the medical director of the medical group reviews it and decides if you have it. My drs office only does rny, band and the sleeve.

I know about five people that have had surgery..most rny and one DS..... two are post op 12 yrs when it was an open incision, one is 2 months post op,  one is 5 yrs post op, she had the DS, and one is 5 months post op.  Ive learned a lot from them and not one of them regret it.  I think its great medi-cal covers it.  When I had blue cross through my employer i was denied.

I have a bmi of 44 and I was approved and I only have hypothyroidism. So should be no problem to get approved.  Only took me 6 days...but the bad thing was they didnt inform me of  the waiting list until after I took all my classes and the scheduler called me with my date . I was devastated to learn i had a eleven month wait though.  My friend in kern county didnt have to wait but they charged her a participation fee so it definitely depends on the doctor. Good luck to you!!

I also have medi-cal, but I am in southern california and here it is managed through cal optima.  I have a plan through Talbert Medical Group.  Medi cal will cover the surgery 100% if you have no share of cost, but the trick is to find a surgeon in your area that accepts it. That actually was pretty easy for me because my pcp sent me to a doctor that accepts it, but I was put on a waiting list because they only do so many surgeries a month for medi cal patients. I have been waiting almost a year.  So yes it is covered, I forget the criteria..it was something like bmi over 40 if you have no comorbidities, no past drug use,  you understand the risks..something like that.  So yes its covered, you just need to find a doctor that takes it and hopefully your medical group knows of one. If not start doing internet searches and calling.. And a lot of the stuff, the nutritionist, psych, etc. have to be done prior to submission too.  Good luck!!

Topic: RE: Gallbladder removal...not going well
I had my gallbladder removed 11 years ago and I suffer constantly from cramping and diarrhea.  I haven't had my RNY yet and so what you are experiencing probably has nothing to do with it.  When I eat my first meal of the day, I can barely fini**** before my stomach starts to cramp, I get sweaty, start to cramp in pain and I run to the bathroom. Just from eating a ham sandwich I can have 2 or 3 episodes.  And since dinner is my bigger meal, it continues on, even worse,  The diarrhea gets so bad that I sometimes suffer from hemorrhoids from going, wiping , etc and even from bleeding episodes.  I can never eat and then go somewhere unless I know I have access to a bathroom. And don't get me started on when I'm driving and stuck in traffic...lol.

I recently had a colonoscopy done to rule out other issues.  Nothing was found except internal hemorrhoids and a diverticulum which is just a strained bowel that causes no problem unless it becomes infected. My doctor said that after gall bladder removal the bile mixes in your stomach and causes this. I never took the powder he prescribed to help with it because Ive been living with it for so long, I'm used to it.  I have noticed that the higher the food is in fat, the more times I go, but even a bowl of cereal can make me sick.  I wish I could say that it gets better, but for me . Its just something I Iive with.   I do wonder, that when I have RNY, if this will change.  Good luck
