I had just started my classes for gastric bypass surgery, when I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Papillary Thyroid cancer.
My surgery and radioactive iodine treatment was a breeze and all of my levels stabilized very quickly. I had no lymph node involvement, but as I am a Gospel vocalist, the surgeon told me up front if they had to remove both lobes of my Thyroid, that I would very likely never sing again. My entire thyroid was removed as they found cancer in both lobes. My voice was very hoarse for a while, but has returned to the point that I am starting to be able to sing again. My last two check ups have been great. No cancer markers. I had surgery in Jan 2012, radioactive iodine at the end of March, and was just released for WLS. My surgery is scheduled for 12/17. Please do not worry. This is not a difficult surgery, or was not for me at any rate. The most difficult part was being in isolation for several days for the radiation. LOL
