I've never posted here before, but i have a dilemma. My cat is 13 years old and he seems to be normal, eating very well, but is just a little tired. I found a small lump on the left side of his neck and his right eye is irritated with a little discharge (i rinse it with some solution)/ I took him to my vet at VCA and after $500 they still dont know what is wrong with him! They ruled out cancer, but they said his splene felt a little large. They also said he has alot of tartar build-up on his back teeth. I just don't know what to do! Can anyone please give me some suggestions???? Thank you, RUBINA

I'm sorry to hear about your baby... The eye may be either conjunctivitis or a respiratory infection. Both are relatively easy to treat, but if your vet ruled those out already, you may want to try to do an internet search on veterinary specialists in your area and see if any of them have a website where you can ask questions in a messageboard-type environment. I don't know about the lump and the spleen. I know vet bills are tough, but if you can't find anything on the internet, I would maybe ask your regular vet if there might be a specialist they could recommend. Take him there as soon as you can, and be sure to ask if he is in pain or if his quality of life is being negatively affected. If not, I wouldn't worry too much since he is pretty old. Anyway, I hope you will both be OK!! Keep us posted on his condition?

Do you have a veterinary school in your area? Maybe you could call there and see if they can help. I think sometimes they charge reduced rates because it's a "teaching" hospital. It's worth a call. We have some vets in our area that ONLY treat cats. Maybe that would be another possibility. Good luck!! I'm thinking about you and wishing kitty a quick recovery.

Did you ever find out what is wrong with your kitty? I have a female Himalayan, 16 yrs old. Last wk, she was more lethargic than usual, wasn''t eating or drinking much. It scared me as I haven't had her to the vet in awhile. I can't afford it. BUT...I was so worried, I thought screw the money and took her. She hated going, always does. She won't get in a cat carrier, so I wrap her in a blanket and she hides her head in the blanket, lol. Anyway, the vet checked her and didn't find any lumps or anything unordinary. She does have mild cataracts in her eyes, so I asked about those. She said the eye doc wouldn't do anything because of her age. She looked at her eyes and said there looks to be some retinal damage, but she's not totally blind yet....YET, poor kitty. Because of her eye problems, the vet suggested getting a urine sample to test for diabetes. That was negative, thank goodness. Total was $41, not too bad. I have to take her back in a few wks for blood workup. It could be thyroid or any number of things, but vet seemed to think it was just her age and that she has some arthritis. Well, when we got home, she seemed fine and has seemed okay since then. This is what I think....she jumped up on the windowsill the other day, and I think she may have sprained or strained something because she had a slight limp on her one side. I do have boxes sitting around for her to get up onto places that she likes, but none for the windows. She's strictly an indoor cat, will not go out even if you let the door open. I hate that she's getting old. She is the best cat I ever had, so loving and never gets into anything and sooooooooooooo smart. She's almost human, I believe! Hope your kitty is okay now!

I wish I had some answers for you, but I know the feeling. I have two white kitties that are about 7 years old and when they don't feel good, I am a basket case! But, I am a nurse practitioner and when people are sick, I am compassionate and caring but worry more about my pets! Oh the heart strings these small ones can tug on... Blessings to each of you!
