Absorption percentages...

I'm finally going to the hematologist this afternoon in hopes of convincing him that I need an iron infusion (mine is 7).  I've copied off an arsenal of information about the DS, but I haven't been able to find the info about what percentages of fats, carbs, protein, etc. that we can absorb.  Could somebody point me in the right direction, or just give me the information?  Please pray that I'm able to convince him of what I need.  I'm tired of feeling like crap.

Thank you!

Hi Lesa,

Each individual absorbs differently, so it's not a precise science. As a result, the absorption percentages are really estimates or best guesses. These are the approximate percentages I've typically seen.

Fat: Absorb 20%
Protein: Absorb 50%
Complex Carbs: Absorb 60%
Simple Carbs: Absorb 100%

Hope that helps!

I had no idea of these stats.  I was under the impression that we only absorb 40% of everything that we eat.

100% on simple carbs....no wonder I gained 17 pounds drinking Pepsi and Mountain Dew.

Hell yes!  High fructose corn syrup is the worst dietary invention EVER!

Though DSers have the freedom to eat or drink whatever, moderation is still the key to success, especially when it comes to simple carbs!

The percentages Jenna gave you are the accepted averages of absorption. I would give your hematologist those numbers.

Just remember that each of us absorbs a little differently.

You can refer your hematologist to the office of your surgeon or just about any DS surgeon. Most have given their clients the same values as listed above.

I think it was a Gagner paper published in 2006(?).
