Topic: RE: Considering DS as a revision option, was RNY in 2005

Dayton, OH.  I have an appointment scheduled with him, but what is the difference.  The research I have seen indicates the DS has the gastrocectomy vs the distal which has the  pouch.  The malabsorption is still obtained along with 86 percent of excessive weight loss in 5 years.

It's not quite as simple as vertical sleeve gastrectomy vs pouch.  The intestinal configuration is very different between a DS and the ERnY.   You get malabsorption with both but you don't get equal malabsorption.  Plus you still have all the problems of a pouch which might include stretched stoma, rapid exit of food into the intestines without sufficient digestion, dumping syndrome.  With a true revision from RnY to DS you regain normal stomach function because your current hidden stomach gets reassembled and then converted to a sleeve gastrectomy thereby preserving your pyloric function and normal gastric digestion of food.

This is a big deal surgery which is not performed by a large number of surgeons because of the difficulty involved in reconstructing the stomach and then creating a sleeve.  It's complex.  It's time consuming.  It's more difficult which is why many revision doctors will do the ERnY instead and tell the patient that it is just as good as a DS.  Please be sure of what you are going after.

Google seroma and serous fluid.

Topic: RE: DOES KIASER COVER DS IN SOUTH CALI
Kaiser of Southern California only has one DS surgeon.  His name is Dr. Belzburg and he is in Harbor City.  He isn't a big fan of the DS, but he does do them.  I don't know if he will do a revision from RNY to DS because because we haven't seen any of those patients on any of the DS boards.  If he won't or can't perfome one (they are extremely difficult and only a handful of DS surgeons in our country are qualified) then your mother may have to appeal to go outside of the Kaiser system.

Topic: RE: Trying again... Any Dr. Davis patients? I have questions (cross-post)
Dr. Garth Davis is not known for doing the DS.  There was some talk that maybe they (he and his father) would start performing the DS but I don't know that much came of that.

Some members here who might be able to help you with more specific information are listed below.

Nicolle spoke with Garth Davis at an event in Chicago.  They spoke about the DS.

Slim Shady is a DS patient as well as a physician in Texas.  He is very well versed in who does what in the bariatric world down there.

Topic: RE: Info on Drs. Wilson or Bonnor???
Slim Shady and Ragamuffin have good information about the doctors you are asking about.  If they are no longer on this site and they miss this question you can find them, along with many old-timers, on one of the other weightloss surgery sites.

Patty, I'm so very sorry for your loss.

Topic: RE: POST DS - (undifferentiated) autoimmune diseases
I have, Anne.  I don't participate much on this site any longer but I'd be happy to talk with you about this if you'd like.  See below.

Topic: RE: Pain in the stomach
So sorry you are experiencing pain like this.  Pain is an indication that something is wrong and you need to have a doctor actually examine you to find out if it is serious or not.  Your own surgeon's office has directed you to go to the ER.  You have had several good suggestions from others on this board to go to the ER.  What you may not realize is that one of the people *****sponded to you and told you to go to the ER is a doctor.

Please go to the ER and get this checked out.  If it's no big deal then all will be well.  However, if it is something serious you surely don't want to get sick or die from ignoring it.  Do you?  Please go.

Topic: RE: USC Program with Dr. Crookes

Belzburg is with Kaiser, not with USC.  Crookes is USC. :)

Thank you! I will contact him by email and save the phone number. I really appreciate your feedback. Since I had my baby this year, I only qualify for 4 weeks of FMLA. I will take every single day allowed plus and PTO time I accrue.
I would love to get in touch with you via PM and hear more about your experience. I will send you a message :)

Lulu,  have you looked into the possibility of applying for short term disability too?  I don't know how that works in conjunction with FMLA but if it's a possibility to you your doctor can complete the paperwork needed.

Topic: RE: Dr. K. - program fee - out of pocket?
Dr. Crookes is the only vetted DS surgeon in California who doesn't have a program fee or other up-front fees beyond insurance co-pays.

As Stacie said, he only does the DS open, but to those of us who have had it done open it has not been a big deal.

Dr. Crookes will ask you questions to make sure you have a very good understanding of how much care and maintenance the DS requires.  Some people interpret this to mean he doesn' t like the DS or that he is trying to talk the patient into a different surgery.  He's just trying to make sure he does the DS on people who are going to benefit from it rather than be harmed by it (by not taking appropriate care of themselves).

If you decide to use Dr. Crookes there are many of his patients on this board who will be happy to talk with you about him.

I highly recommend it. LOL

Sher, I also end up with G.I. distress when I'm stressed.  It started about 25 years ago so I have a bit of experience managing it. ;)

Counseling will be a wonderful thing to resume.  I'm glad to see that you are planning to do that.  The Ativan is probably going to be the biggest, immediate, weapon in your arsenal.  Utilize it.  For me it was/is Xanax but the idea is the same with both of those meds - immediate anxiety relief.  That relief will calm your G.I. distress like nobody's business.

I know what types of situations will rev up my digestive tract into misery (visiting my neurotic 94 year old mother for example) so I just automatically pop a Xanax prophylactically and the problem is handled - No G.I. distress.

Also, you are now firmly in the Two-Week Freak period.  It's normal to be feeling scared, nervous, anxious, etc.  So, since it's normal, just go with it.  You've thought out your decision well.  You already know why the DS is the best choice for you.  Stop making yourself nuts by questioning yourself.  You got this! :)

Sue- What does one have to do to meet you? What are the criteria one must complete before getting to be in your curmudgeonly presence? I would love to meet some of you guys IRL and have my picture taken with you and maybe get your autograph.
I'm not sure what the requirements have been for others but in order for me to meet Ms. Cal Culator I was required to complete a 73 page questionnaire, clear a DOJ background clearance, and provide proof that my IQ was above double digits.  From what I understand, I got off easy.

Oh, by the way - Good luck with getting a picture of her.  Every photo in which she *should* have been seen has ended up either completely pixelated or her image is mysteriously absent.  It's the darndest thing.

Diana, whether we met before or this was the first time it was very nice spending some spa time with you and dinner with you and your Mr.

It seems to me that I recall a camera flash or two so perhaps there is some incriminating evidence somewhere?

Topic: RE: OT--Like Popeye, I yam what I yam?
Slim,

It was truly great meeting you and Ragamuffin.  I'm glad we got to steal away Rags for some spa time and lunch and then to spend the next evening with both of you, Diana and her "wrangler", Ms. Cal and Mr. Cal.  The only thing that would have been better was more time to visit.

As for things said while driving....er....There is the slightest of possibilites that I may suffer from a similar condition. lol

So this person whom you met found you to be intelligent, funny, articulate, holding of opinions which you share when necessary, helpful, friendly (unless provoked by....um....stupidity), witty?

I always thought that I came across as in real life as I yam online but it was pointed out to me that I appear very nice on these boards where as in real life I am....er....less so on occasion.  Hmmm.....
