Topic: RE: What would you do?
Melody, hats off to you for taking this issue into your own hands, not accepting what you were being told, and ensuring you were being taken seriously by finding a surgeon who would listen. FANTASTIC!!!
Topic: RE: 3 year surgiversary
Thanks so much for the replies, they all mean a lot to me.

I had a good day. My date wrapped his arms around me and said "wow you are thin, my arms cross way over when they are around you." He doesn't know about surgery yet so that was kinda nice to hear ;)
Topic: RE: 3 year surgiversary

I’m 3 years out from Duodenal Switch surgery today. I lost 185 lbs (from 344 lbs to 159 lbs) and then had a 20 lb regain this past fall/winter, but I will lose it before the summer!

I take a dance class. I walk (far). I run (across the street).
I skate. I hike.
I have to push myself, I still forget or fear that I can’t do these things, but I can.

I date.

I live.

I struggle with my doctors to get proper care; it’s exhausting but necessary. I’ll never stop educating myself and being my own advocate.

I still struggle with emotional eating, it will always be a challenge for me but I feel better equipped to deal with it.

No regrets.

Topic: RE: Help Pls - Rocaltrol / Calcitroil
Thanks Julie, if I keep trending down I will mention the liquid form.
Topic: RE: Help Pls - Rocaltrol / Calcitroil
I'll ask my endo about the shots when I go back in 6 weeks and let you know. Not sure of their status in Canada.

I was taking 50K a day (of MIchelle's) and was still trending down, am taking 150K D now and the calcitroil to see what it does.
Topic: RE: Help Pls - Rocaltrol / Calcitroil
Yes I'm taking your Dry 50K's. I don't take with food or oils and take them with time in between. I assume I still take the 50Ks with the calcitriol?
Topic: RE: Help Pls - Rocaltrol / Calcitroil
Saw my endo today and since I am not absorbing well the mega doses of D she prescribed the Rocaltrol / Calcitroil. Am I supposed to continue taking my D as well as this? Do we even absorb this stuff, looks oil based.

: /

start rant - my iron/ferritin has been deficient for a LONG time, I can't get it up orally (snicker) I want infusions and she told me to stop taking iron since I'm not absorbing it anyway (i am so freakin tired) and that we will talk about the possibility fo infusion in 6 weeks... FFS I just want infusions to have energy again  /cries - end rant

Topic: RE: Canadians and DS - info please
J

I wish you all the luck in the world. A high BMI will help you. Please go in as educated as you can. There are doctors in Ottawa involved in the bariatric system that are dead opposed to DS. Fingers crossed you get a more informed and unbiased one who actually believes patients have a right to have a say in their treatment. Since the whole change to OHIP I have only heard of one virgin (non-revision) DS being performed that they covered and it was actually performed by a surgeon in Toronto who I had never heard of.

All the best and let us know how it goes.

Great to see you posting Michelle, looking forward to your update.
Topic: RE: Bait and Switcheroo...
No surgeon out there would sign a contract to guarantee you will get a full DS. There is no way they can forsee how the surgery will go. And you may really want a full DS, but at the expense of your life??

There are surgeons that have a higher completion rate than others and that's what you should be asking: "How many surgeries were you unable to complete and what were the cir****tances for that to occur?" Get a percentage because numbers can be deceiving, one surgeon may only have 1 incomplete but has only done 100 surgeries... one may have 25 incomplete but has done 4000 surgeries... If you don't like their answer, keep looking, but please keep in mind more than anything you need an experienced surgeon.

I know it's frustrating but there is no 100% guarantee.
Topic: RE: Bait and Switcheroo...
This is my opinion on surgeon search because I have a list posted on my site.

Disclaimer: This turned out to be a bit soapboxy haha, sorry! Not directed at Allie but to pre-ops in general

At the end of the day it is up to every single person to do their own research on their potential surgeon, no one can do that for them. Ask questions here (OH) and when you meet with a surgeon go in educated and ready to ask your questions. It's your body that you are handing over to them and trusting them with, so you should be taking the time to educate yourself.

Yep, it would be great if the search feature on OH improved because it really sucks... Keep in mind people have to watch for liable lawsuits so there is a limit to what you can post in public. That's why I won't just copy all those posts and throw them on DS Facts (plus how do I know they are all accurate?).

My list does not include all DS surgeons. It includes the more experienced and known NON bait and switchers, the best of the best. There are newer DS surgeons out there that are up and coming and are getting more experience every day, and just because they aren't on my list doesn't mean they are not good surgeons or bait and switchers. It just means that to be comfortable including them on the list I want to see a decent quantity of post op patients to assess skill. But many people have gone to these surgeons, asked all their questions and felt really comfortable having their surgery with them. That is fantastic, they did their homework. My list is for the lazy person who isn't going to do that, I am trying to steer them to the best places possible.
Topic: RE: Incisional Hernia Repair Advice
No I wouldn't say it's rare. I had open DS so I already had the vertical scar, I may not have opted for that cut if I had had lap DS. I wanted the TT portion of my LBL surgery to have the fleur de lis cut since it yields better results, pulling in the excess skin from the sides. Plus it cleaned up my DS scar to be less noticeable (and removed the train tracks left over from the staples). My LBL was to address the extreme butt shelf excess skin. Very happy with the results.
Topic: RE: Incisional Hernia Repair Advice
Hernia doesn't break you DS except it can often inhibit people from losing as much weight as they could if they didn't have the hernia. I have heard from many people that they really feel the restriction again when the hernia is fixed. (Wasn't the case so much for me.)

Since there were no DS surgeon in Ottawa I educated my general surgeon for my hernia repair on DS. He had the number of my surgeon and detailed info on my DS surgery and new anatomy. I felt very comfortable and there were no issues.

I also had my hernia fixed with plastics (LBL with fleur de lis TT). Since I had muscle repair no mesh was necessary for the hernia which I was THRILLED with!! There was nothing for my general surgeon to do bu****ch my plastic surgeon do his thing =)

All the best.

Topic: RE: Iron Question - daily max? Vitalady?
My iron has tanked so low I can barely put one foot in front of the other, sleep 10 hours and still need a 2.5 hour nap after work. I had blood work done yesterday, have my appointment with my endo in 2 weeks to get a referal to a hemo since my family doc doesn't like infusions...

Does anyone know if there is a max amount of iron a person should not exceed taking in a 24h period? Ignore constipation for a minute and lemme worry about that. I just want to not be falling asleep standing up.

I am taking proferrin 3 a day and want to up it to double (or more) that if I can without stopping all BMs but don't want to iron OD (if that is possible being as deficient as I am).

Appreciate the input.
Topic: RE: Cost of Vit K Test?
Yep they don't test it here and at the med labs they think you are nuts.
Topic: RE: Cost of Vit K Test?
Does anyone know the approx cost of getting vit K tested? We can;t get it tested here in Ontario and I was wondering what it would cost me if I went to the US to have it tested every few years.

Thanks.
Topic: RE: Wellbutrin Question
I got a question from a Canadian on my web site about Wellbutrin and DS and I am hoping someone out there may have some info.

She was on the XL but it wasn't working well so her doc switched her to the SR. However the SR works even less (which makes sense as a DS patient). Apparently, in the states you can get instant release but not here.

Her doc isn't really up on the whole DS thing so she needs some options/suggestions to bring to her doc to try. If anyone is on Wellbutrin, what have your docs suggested to you? Increasing dosage, if so to what?

Any help would be appreciated and if anyone knows about getting the instant version of Wellbutrin in Canada that would be fantastic.

Thanks,
Bev
