Ho w are you doing Vamp?  Hope all is well for you.  Post a line or two and let us know how things are going with your healing, hunger or hopefully lack of!  Re. the port pain, I never had any after about 1 month and I understand mine was sore longer than others.  I got so used to my bump that I actually miss it now, LOL!  Corliss

    Hi Corliss,

I am doing great, and thank you for asking!  It has been 3 weeks now since my sleeve surgery, and I've already lost 16 pounds and I'm pain & vomit-free.  I have even been able to eat small amounts of pasta and rice.   I SO wish I'd done this instead of the band, I can't help but wonder if I'd already be to my goal weight by now!

    How are YOU doing?

    Be well,
    Natalie

Hi all, I had great success with my band initially and eventually succeeded in loosing more than 200 lbs and was at goal.  The last 30-50 pounds were lost in a very unhealthy way.  I puked all the time and ended up having emergency surgery to have my band removed Sept. 19, 2008.  I have regained from below 180 up to 220.  I am trying to decide whether to have a second band placed or have the gastric sleeve.  Sinc e weight loss was not my problem, puking was, I dont' think I need the malabsorption but I sure am scared of the sleeve.  Anyonne with similiar issues please reply.

You already know you can do extremely well with restriction alone and no malabsorption so I think a sleeve is a great idea.

Banding... sooo much to say.  Re-ops are 30-50% in the first five years depending on which study you read.  It has a LOT of potential complications, the weight loss is harder, slower, and at 5 years not great.

The sleeve affords you many fewer long term potential risks and complications.  Also, I just heard a stat from my doc's office a few days ago.  My doc went to a conference in the US and the stats for successful band replacement or repositioning is about 30%.

The sleeve... I love it.  I was banded, got to goal, and couldn't take it anymore so I revised to a sleeve.  The difference in how easy this is vs. a band is night and day.

I believe you that you did not cause your slip, if you lost 200# you clearly knew how to work a band.  Slips are not always the fault of anyone, they happen.  That's how it works.

The sleeve is just plain easier.  No maintenance, no fills/unfills, no slips, erosion, none of that.  You have surgery and you are done for life.  To me a sleeve feels exactly like before I ever had WLS but I just get full faster.  No puking, sliming, or other assorted ways of stoma spewing.  You have no stoma, just a small stomach.

You couldn't pay me to get another band.  They just have too many long term problems, exactly like what you experienced.

Stop and think about how many are refusing to band people anymore.  Many docs within the US, hospitals in Sweeden, and the entire country of Chile is doing away with banding and switching to sleeves and bypass.

Hi there Midwestern Girl!  Thanks for your post. It was very informative.  I am glad to hear your perspective.  More than likely, if i have another WLS it will be a sleeve.  I am just trying to hold off as long as i can.  Right now, I am working on intuitive eating.  If it doesn't work for me without surgery, I will probably have the sleeve, but like I said, I would rather have a facelift!
