I was on neurontin for a while, it seemed to help alot, but then all of the sudden, I started swelling up and retaining water, I had to come off of it. Glad to see your doing ok with it,

I have fibro, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I am in my second year of working on my disability. I just had my hearing a couple of weeks ago. Now just waiting. I am taking Lyrica, nabutone, ultracett and oxycodone for breakthrough pain. I also take Lunesta for sleep and use a CPAP with oxygen at night. Some good days, some bad days and some days that I can't get out of bed.
My weight loss is very very slow, but I am still clicking away.I take a silver sneakers arobic class that has been very helpful. Low impact, lots of stretching and balance exercises.
We each just have to work and try to carry on the best we can. Good luck everyone!!

Congrats on your decision. I agree with His Lady, it won't make your fibro go away. But losing weight will make your depression better, your joints will feel better, its a lot of work but well worth the ride. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you! I'm preparing & going forward with the surgery. I've been thinking about it so much. What you said is true, & I've come to the same conclusion. I have so many health issues the weight loss can improve that I just can't pass up this chance! I stayed up most of the night contemplating the pro's & con's again of having the surgery & talked to my family this morning. I also received a blessing at church & feel much better about having it done. By tomorrow at this time, I'll be post-op & starting a new journey!

I've had fibro for over 20 yrs and I can say the general consensus is that surgery doesn't help the fibro pain itself BUT just losing a great deal of weight is bound to help you feel better. Just all the extra weight on your joints alone causes pain so that should improve. You may need to adjust medications because of the malabsorbtion but that can usually be dealt with. I think if it makes it worse that it is only temporary and improves the farther out you go. You are the only one who can make the final decision but I can say there are lots of folks who are very glad they had the surgery. Good luck to you!

Topic: Having Second Thoughts on WLS

I'm having my RNY Monday & am now scared to death because of some of the stories posted on the message boards. I've had severe fibromyalgia for well over 7 yrs. I take Cymbalta (120 mgs daily), diclofenac {voltaren (150 mgs daily)}, Abilify (5 mgs daily), wellbutrin (150 mgs daily), along with diabetes & high blood pressure medication. I also have sleep apnea. My life changed so much because of the fibro, & other health issues, that I ended up in clinical depression. The main reason for even having the surgery is to get some of my life back & try to stop some of the pain. I've tried pool therapy & walking, but end up paying for any exercise with more pain. I'm 290 lbs. right now & thought that by losing the weight, my health would overall improve. Now I see where it may not help my fibro at all...& could make it worse, although I can't imagine it being worse.

I've made the decision to have surgery against my husband's & parents' wishes & am now second guessing myself. My husband says he doesn't have a good feeling about it, along with my parents. I just hope I'm making the right decision....

Sorry for the rant, but had to vent somewhere. I sure don't need my family against it more than they already are. Anyone out there with a few words of wisdom or GOOD news about how WLS has helped with their medical problems, esp. fibro?

    Thanks!

I just had VSG 11 days ago, so I'm too early out to tell, but I've been dealing with CFS/Fibro for 20 years and I'm REALLY hoping for an improvement. Recovery has been similar to most people's, though I can tell you my body is very achy, especially my legs. Maybe that's just me. Good luck!

weight loss does NOT help with the fibro pain.  i lost 200.  then gained back half of it.  i have been hurting all the way through.  my social security disability was a 2.5 year battle.  fibro was one of many factors in disability, which was only approved this past week.  i think that if i have sugar it messes with my achiness and hurting.  it gets less localized and more insistant.

    that's it for me.
    anyone else?

    i take 60 cymbalta 2x daily
             600 neurontin 4x daily
              30 buspirone 2x daily
                5 flexiril 4x daily
                2 extra strength acetaminaphen 4xdaily

i wish i had a breakthrough med.  i use pain patches, or ice, or my tens unit (electric shock), or a combination of them along with extra flexoril.

i tried savella and had a bad reaction to it.

    Topic: RE: Fibromyalgia and WLS
First let me say, that EVERYONE if different. Before surgery I was only taking 1/2 a pain pill (750 mg vicodine) at bed time, and going to the gym 3 days a week.
I have RA and Fibro. I was taking Enbrel for 8 yrs.(I developed a bone tumor from long turn use of the enbrel, and had to have my S3,4,5 and tailbone removed, so can NO longer Ever take any TNF inhibitor)  I went off the Enbrel 1 month prior to surgery, because of the infection complications side effects.  On 4-28-09 I had RNY surgery. on 5-13-09 til 5-31-09 I was in the hospital with a severe infection that almost killed me. and then went home with a antibotic IV drip every 6 hrs for 3 months... The weight loss had been GREAT.! But am soo scared to have the plastic surgery done now, due to infections.
BUT WHAT THEY DON'T TELL U--- after the weight loss surgery (start 292, got down to 147) the RA and the FIBRO do NOT get better. Actually the RA is worse, because you don't have the fatty tissue in the joints anymore. And the FIBRO hurts more because of the muscle mass loss. I have had to up my pain meds,(1000 mg vicodine, and 150 Lyrica). They have even resorted to putting me on Rituxen, which is a form of Chemotherapy for pain. And it isn't working. The only think that would help, and it is killing me to do it, is gaining weight. If that doesn't make you sick. Kinda a irony. Have weight loss, to save my life, then almost die. Then lose the weight, but live in massive pain, unless you gain back some of the weight. LOL have to laugh to keep from crying. LOL  Now I am back up to 200. The pain is a little better, but I won't put on any more. this much is making me sick........ Also, another thing they are now realizing.  That with the weight on, you have large pockets of fatty tissue on the pelvic floor. (which is the muscle that holds the bladder up, the uteras and anus in place) and when you lose the weight, the bladder falls, the uteras prolaps, and the colon enlarges.  I just wanted to let you know exactly what I have been thru.  I have been asked if I would go thru it all again, and I have to honestly say, I don't think I would have. I would have kept up the working out in the pool, and cardio.  Now I am unable to go to the gym, because of the muscle loss, I have already torn my rotor cuff. And because of the bone loss, I have bone fractures that make working out very painful. The only thing I can do is swimming... And now that I have HAD to gain some weight back, I am very sick to my stomach with all of it....Sorry if this isn't want you wanted to hear, but just thought that you should have both sides. Everyone always trys to make the surgery look good, which for most it is. I am one of the bad results. But keep in mind also, that they are getting better and better with all of it.!! Good luck,

Topic: RE: Fibro Pain - Meds & Artificial Sweetener
Hi Rita, I also have fibro and was looking for info about "fibro and artificial sweetener" when I saw your post. I too have effects of artificial sweetener. I have been on the Atkins diet and noticed when ever I ate their products or other protein shakes I would have a rapid heart beat and just feel all around sick. It wasn't until I read the list of ingredients on all the products I was eating or drinking that I noticed the one consistent ingredient, "artificial sweetener". I have also been drinking "low calorie" drinks, which also contains artificial sweetener. I have been feeling so horribly sick for weeks (as long as I've been on this particular diet) and in incredible pain,  I never knew that artificial sweeteners had such an effect on someone with fibromyalgia. I was dx with fibro in 2000 and it still amazes me just how little I don't know about this disease. Thank you for your in for and good luck with your surgery. Winnie

     Dianne,

Totally understand! I almost want to get a ***disclaimer*** t-shirt, something along the lines of...

"I do not have brain damage, ride the "short bus" or smoke crack, I am just having a bad brain day!"

    On the back...

"if you have to ask, you wouldn't understand!"

Somedays I feel like I have a chunk of Swiss cheese for a brain with a herd of meeces approaching! On a serious note, I live in a different State than my family & most of my friends. I have to admit, I have ceased contact with a large percentage of my extended family & friends, due to my mental changes. I have not been open about having Fibro just because of the stigma associated with it. I am embarrassed for people who knew the "old me" to see the way I am now. You can camouflage the pain & discomfit, but the mental changes can't be hidden away.

I am glad that my words helped someone else cause Lord knows they don't help me! Lol. I read on another post here about the "Spoon Theory", if you haven't read it, look it up, it's a must read!

I have been on savella for about 7mos now and it has helped with the pain and makes it so i can fuction to a point. I still have flares and they are bad but not as long as they used to be they used to last weeks and now may last a few days to a week not so intense.
i was lyrica and it helped for awhile then stopped working along with me gaining wieght and when you have had WLS and eating your amounts your supposed to very hard to see the scale move upward.

i am on an anti depressent as well so dr watches my labs very carefully. I advise anyone who has trouble with fibro meds to consider savella it is VERY EXPENSIVE but works I have had no one tell me it didn't work I am sure it don't work on everyone.

make sure your dr works with you..if they don't listen or rush you out of thier office or exam room time to find a new dr. mine thankfully takes all the time needed to find a solution and all of her patients agree sometimes the wait others have to endure is worth it cause we know that patient needed that time as we did.

I was dignosed with fibro 1 1/2 yrs after WLS.. they say i have had it for a long time ,but i just chalked the pain i felt to being FAT!!! Boy was I wrong!!!
My sleep sucks and can be up all night without sleep meds if i take meds i get about 3hrs of sleep not good but some at least. my social anxiety is aweful and panic attacks started along with my depression worsened, I now am in therapy once a week for those. I too am not working I was a caregiver/CNA and no longer can do that work  or much of anything. I do Great to get my daily must exercise to keep my wieght down which i did gain 15lbs so back to the basics once again.

whoever says fibro makes you lose wieght i wanna argue that fact cause it don't ....Dr.s who say that are crazy loons.

I too think about applying for disablility but have heard that they are very hard on fibro patients.
I have been put on 5mg of methadone as needed up to twice a day .. I use it sparingly and ONLY when i can't stand it anymore..that is bad i know.

I am currently on 200 MGS OF savella 100mg in the mornin and100mg at bedtime
     300mg of wellbutrin
    10mg of paxil
10mg of amytriptialin ..to help w/sleep
2.5MG of predisone tohelp w/ inflamation
    10mg of ambien
now for the massive pain i take 5mg of methadone as i need it...i use it ONLY when needed and it keeps me from being admitted to hospt.

I have tried many fibro drugs and this is what works...I still have many bad days but push through the best I can...yes the tears and cursing happen often, I will not let this damn condition kill me.

Now sleep is a big issue for me and most of time find it hard to sleep...i am dependent on my sleep- meds for what little sleep i do get . Hot baths after working out have been helpful and so is water areobics at the Y
    I hope this helps some
