They're weights with handles and you do exercises to videos with them.  I just started working with them today, they are definetely a challenge.  They come in a bunch of different pounds so as you get better you can move up in weight.  I am at the lowest one I could find at Dick's Sporting Goods (10 lbs.) and got a good workout today.  I could only do 2 of the 3 circuits on the video because it was my first day (about 30 min).  You get a 30 second break in between each exercise to recover.  I hope to work up to doing all 3 circuits by a few weeks out.  Here's the brand I used, it's something different than just weight training so I thought it looked interesting.  I liked it and would recommend them.  I just wondered if anyone else uses them.    http://www.gofit.net/site/gofit/section/83
I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

Kris, I hope you will keep posting your results.  I have read about them and have been curious but have never worked out with them.  I am looking forward to hearing about them and your results. Katy B.

I haven't used them, but my DH uses kettlebells sometimes.  He says it's a really different workout.  You use more muscles to do the same motions because you're also balancing the bells.

I have a few. I use them for a change of pace. I like the swings and like to juggle them sometimes. I have a throwing buddy that competes in highland games that likes to throw them for height and distance. Check out http://www.crossfit.com/ for what some others are doing with them as far as fitness training. They aren't magic, jut another tool to use in a workout.  Just about anything that can be done with kettlebells can be done with  dumbbells. This is kettlebell juggling...it's actually really fun and challenging workout outside on a sunny day. http://youtube.com/watch?v=6ff9ThIQxL4 Good luck Earl
