I ran the Mardi Gras 5K yesterday (the baby event for the marathon that kydurran posted about), which was another first for me.  I wasn't expecting to have such a hard go of it, after a relatively rigorous training schedule (well, rigorous for me). . .  I had a tough time finding my rhythm and the first mile REALLY hurt. . . Nevertheless, I finished, and I was quite satisfied.  Now, it is time to concentrate on next month's 10K. Time = 33:53 Pace = 10:56 Overall place = 471/786

Hurray Erin!!! You did great!  And your finish time and pace were AWESOME!  That first mile is always the hardest for me too ... it takes me about a mile to get a good rhythm going to my breathing pattern.  Weren't you just so thrilled when you finished though???  You did it! I'm so proud of you! Deanna  :)

Thanks for the encouragement, Deanna. . .  Yeah, I felt very little pain crossing the finish line, but in retrospect, the difficulty I had with the first mile (self-doubt was a big part of it) seems to overshadow all of the elation.  I'm trying to re-build my confidence, as well as my physical endurance,  for the 10K that is next month. Eck, this is all part of the progression as a runner, right?. . . Thanks, again.  I always appreciate your upbeat posts! ~Erin

Great job!  Great time for your first 5k.  Mine was in the 36' range.  Good luck with your 10k, it is much more serious effort.   Things should keep getting better. Rob

Way to go.  Good for you.  Why was it hard?  Was it the course or just not what you were expecting? Congrats.
Scott

Scott:   I have been running pretty hard, and I was quite confident that this would be a cake walk for me.  By the first mile,  I still hadn't gotten my breathing under control, and I panicked that I would make the entire run.  There was  A LOT of talking myself through it, which I wasn't expecting.  In some ways, I figured I had progressed beyond that "stage". . .I had been running more than 5K almost daily for the previous 3 weeks.    It has been a good lesson for me, to say the least.
