Do you have suggestions how to get me past being able to run only 1/4 mile at a time?  I had gotten up to 1/2 mile one time and right after that hurt my knee so I returned to walking and the Eliptical for 30-45 minutes (if outside, walk usually 1 1/2 - 2 hours).  I thought I would get back on the treadmill and be able to easily job that 1/2 mile and then improve it.  I am just really out of breath at that time so I slow it down and walk for 5-10 minutes and then jog again.  Soooooooo, how did you do it?  I see many of you running marathons now. Thanks for your help. Jackie

I've been trying to slower my pace when I feel like that.   like lower to the speed I would walk,  but jog at that pace.  but I'm just starting this so not sure if thats the best advice or not.  my friend gave me this training plan which I've been trying to follow.... http://halhigdon.com/ I was up to the 1.5 before this stupid flu hit.  now I have to backtrack a bit & build back up.

Walk for a minute and run for a minute.  Do it for a few days then walk for a minute and run for two minutes.  Do that for a few days then walk for 1 run for 3.  Keep up that cycle increasing the running time and try it for about 20 minutes alternating the walking and running for the first few weeks.

Jackie,

I think intervals are a great way to get started. You might want to check out a program like cool running's couch to 5k to build up you distance. Here is a like to the program:

Do the walking/running that Scott suggested. That is what I did and I am up to 5 miles an hour. Once I got good at the walk/run then I started running at 4.5 and went up every 10 minutes. It wont take long until you are running the whole hour.
