I gotten back into mountain biking and am giving serious thought to doing a 40 mile ride in 6 weeks. I can currently ride 20 miles easily and have a training plan planned.  I'm 3 months post op and have about 45 lbs go to until I reach my goal, I've list 30% of my starting body weight.  Is it too soon to do something this big?

I'd say float the idea by your dr & nutritionist, to see if it's ok physically, but I'd guess as long as you train for the distance, go for it! Good luck!!

My surgeon told me to let my body tell me if it can handle what I'm doing. In that same note: Since you can do 20 miles easily, I'd see if you could edge it up a little every day until you get to 40 and see how you do. I can do 20 miles in an hour on street surface, but I don't know about mountain biking! Make sure you're practicing what you'd be doing so you know if you can handle it or not.

Either way, this is awesome!

Are you going to do the Tour de Tucson? I'm doing the 40 mile leg, my first big ride, and I'm just shy of a year post-op.

I have no problem with 25, and I've been told that you can do a supported ride about three times your usual distance without too much trouble. The aid stations are fairly close together, especially on the first half, so being able to get some juice and take breaks shouldn't be too bad.

My only concern would be how much your pouch has matured at 3 months. How much water can you drink at a time? If you have to sip for the whole 40 miles that might be a bit difficult; I take a LOT of water every time I break and I get dehydrated if I can't get at least 3 big swallows in a row as I ride. If memory served, I was hard pressed to eat even half of a protein bar at 3 months out, so that's the only bit I'd be nervous about.

Yes, in doing the 40 mile leg. I can easily do 40 miles now with snacks, vitamin water and isopure. I have family and friends who will meet me at various intervals to restock vitamin water and isopure. What kind of bike do you ride?

Awesome! It looks like the aid stations are at parks and schools and whatnot, so hopefully it's easy to have friends meet up with you.

I have a road bike, nothing too fancy but it does seem to ride a bit better than my mountain bike, even with slick tires on it. How about you?
