Phone App GPS

So I tested the MapMyRun app against my Garmin 910xt (Triathlon watch built in GPS)

I set my watch to notify me every mile on my 12 mile run yesterday. This is not really straight but not really filled with turns either.

Mile 1 Phone App was off .1 miles (no to bad)

Mile 2 .25 miles off.

My mile 7 the phone was over by more than mile.

at 12 miles the deviation was almost .5

.5 doesn't sound like much but when you are distance training you will come up short.  While yes your body will compensate that last little pit could be hard.

A decent entry level GPS watch can be found for under 200 so while you are buying good running shoes and clothes invest in a decent GPS watch with a HRM so that you can better track your progress.  Sometimes progress isn't seen in running faster but in by how your Heart Rate responds.    When your HR starts to drop and remain steady at a lower HR for what you normally run it will be time to push that little bit extra.

I tested mine this morning.  My Garmin 220 showed 8.1 miles and my phone GPS/Endomondo showed 8.62 miles.

My time has not improved much over the last 2 months but my avg HR has dropped 10-15 points.  My avg HR this morning was 128 for averaging just under 14 minutes per mile.  I would guess my average 2 months ago would have been 138-145.
