Hello Everyone,

My surgery date is May 2nd.  My doctor is giving me a choice between "Lap Band" & "Realize Band". I've read about both.  To me there are only minor differences.  Any suggestions/comments on either?  Any help would be great. I guess I was just wanting my doctor to make the decision for me... Thanks

Good Question...I think Dr Nicholson does the Realize Band, but I would like to know other people's opinions on the two also. So people, please respond! Barbara Brewer

REALIZE Band on 08/04/08 with

I thought the main selling point of the Realize Band is the fact that when you lose weight that the port has a low profile and will not stick up very high as opposed to some of the other bands which are marketed. Marti in San Jose

I have the realize badn and I love it. I have not had anything so far that I have been outright unable to tolerate. Also when I speak with friends that have the lapband it seems that the port is more visable than with the Realize. I have to really feel for mine in order to locate it.

Hi! You many also want to check out lapbandtalk.com. There's a lot of information comparing Allergan AP and Realize bands. Here are some pictures I found (you may have seen these before):
Attached Images

The info below was posted by Dr. Brad Watkins from Synchrony Health, Cincinnati, OH on lapbandtalk.com on 12/12/07. Dr. Watkins is also a member of the Advisory Board for ObesityHelp.com.

Differences between REALIZE and ALLERGAN bands:
Clinical outcomes (slip rate, erosion rate, weight loss, etc) are very similar between the two bands. The Allergan band is the original band (Allergan bought the Inamed band company which bought Bioenterics company - these are the old names of the same band)
Surgically, there are subtle differences such as:
The Allergan band comes in many sizes, REALIZE band is one size.
Allergan has two port sizes; REALIZE is one port size.
Allergan ports are stitched to the muscle fascia (the tough white stuff on the outside of the muscle); REALIZE port has neat technology that attaches itself to the muscle fascia and may have slightly less port pain the first few days after surgery. The REALIZE ports have a neat tool that places the port and secures it with a handheld instrument making it really easy on the surgeon. (Don't tell anyone but they could teach monkeys to do this stuff.)
Allergan band tubing has little arrows printed on it pointing the surgeon to the tab end of the tubing which is a nice feature in the operating room.
Allergan ports are smaller around (circumference) and taller - perhaps easier to palpate for fills.
REALIZE ports are bigger around and less prominent. Think small stack of silver dollars versus taller stack of quarters to create the mental image.
Allergan tubing is closer to the septum (the area that you aim for with the needle for adjustments/fills) and perhaps more susceptible to needle sticks requiring port replacement.
REALIZE ports have the septum farther away from the tubing - the tubing is a little more protected.
Both bands are now easier to unbuckle in the event a surgeon has to reposition the band.
The REALIZE band comes with a neat instrument that helps to pass the band around the upper stomach.
The Allergan AP bands have "pillows" in the inflatable portion of the inner balloon that prevents balloon-to-balloon contact. The REALIZE band does have balloon-to-balloon contact. Some people think that this contact may cause issues years later but long-term studies have not shown this to be the case.

I hope this information is helpful. Good luck on your journey!

THE REALIZE BAND IS TO NEW HOW CAN ANY ONE SAY WHAT THE LONG TERM STUDIES REALLY ARE? BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU READ A LOT OF THIS STUFF IS B.S. ON THESE SO CALLED FORUMS. A LOT OF MISLEADING INFO - READERS SHOULD BEWARE AND NOT TAKE FORUMS OF ANY SURGICAL PROCEDURE TO BE FACTUAL - FDA WARNS OF MAKING ILLEGAL COMMENTS OF ANY WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCTS MAKING CLAIMS SUCH AS THESE!

Actually, isn't the Realize band another name for the Swedish band that has been in use in Europe now for years with success?

At any rate, I have the Realize band and so far am doing great with it.

Oh and and all caps on the internet equals shouting...

Dr. Curry has posted that they are basically the same medically but from what I understand the Realize band comes with a lot of web support that the Lap Band does not have.

10 cc band - 2/27 - 4 cc; 4/10 - 1.5 cc; 5/21 - 2 cc; 11/19 - 1 cc; 7/8 - .5 cc  = 9 cc total

I have the Allergen 4 cc band and have 4 cc in it.  I have the low profile port and am at goal and can't see it.  The band has nothing to do with the port.  The low profile ports have been available for qute awhile now.

The port size is irrelavant unless you lose most of your excess weight..its under the skin on the muscle and you cant see unless you're skinny. At that point it can be switched out for a smaller port or you can ask your doctor for the smaller lapband port from the getgo...keep in mind if you go with small port its harder to find and the Realize band port requires a larger incision meaning a bigger scar.

Realize band has to be put in empty - the lapband is implanted with the first fill at the time of surgery for an immediate sense of restrction.
The new clinical trials show lapband at almost 50% excess weight loss at 11 months - The realize is 43% in 3 years. indivual results vary obviously.

I just came back from a seminar tonight and there was a patient there who had the Realize Band and lost no weight at all and all the lapband partients looked great. There was a guy there who showed us the new lapband website --- its amazing - there is so much support and fun cool tools on there I cant wait to check it out. Maybe they didnt have a website before but I can tell you its pretty incredible from what this guy was showing us.

I sure the Realize band is ok but I don't want to do this again..Im not taking any chances...im geting lapband

Realize band is not the new band. It is FDA approved band in 2007. It is just like Lap band system. 2 Years of experience in the U.S.

Before going to choose one band for surgery , read this information about lap band VS realize band

You get really great information here.

My doctor said they are essentially the same.  The port is a little more prominent for Lapband but my doctor said that out of almost 500 surgeries, only one patient has cared enough to go back under the knife for the lower profile port. It is an option though.  Honestly, even a slightly noticeable port is still a heck of alot better than 100 lbs of excess weight on my body....if I had to choose which one I'd rather tolerate for the rest of my life!!
