diverticulitis

 Hi All,

has any of you ever suffered from diverticulitis? Is this something that could be related to the band? I have seen now quite a few times that people started having problems with hard stool, and I was just wondering if this could be kind of a "side effect".

Thanks for your inputs,

Evelyn

Hard stools are indirectly band related because of our limited diet, but that can be avoided by careful eating, Movicol, added fibre etc..

Diverticulitis can be caused by a low fibre diet and by straining to pass hard stools.

So i guess the answer is that it may be a side effect of banding. But we can take care, as I say, to avoid both constipation and insufficient fibre.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

Evelyn,

I wouldn't say that it's directly related to the band. Post-op eating could contribute to diverticulitis if your diet was very low in fiber. My husband has diverticulosis (sacs in the colon, but without inflammation) and our gastroenterologist told him that the diverticula (sacs) may have occured due to inborn weaknesses in the colon wall and that the best treatment for it is to increase his fiber intake.

And of course, low fiber intake is related to constipation and hard stool.

I had a bout of it before I even got my band.  Dear Lord it hurts so bad.  I'm sorry you are having this issue, but my doctor gave me antibiotic for it, to kill the infection and help w/ the inflammation.

Many hugs to you, maybe you should try your PCP....Good luck

I don't think that in general it's associated with the band. My brother has had it for years and his is from a low fiber diet, he eats alot of processed foods. I think some folks are just prediposed to it.

Thanks for your input, guys- I never had this problem before and it is very, very painful- unfortunately my bad luck with UK doctors, so nobody here is willing to help me with this problem. A doctor from Germany sent me now antibiotics, hopefully it will get better!

Thank you

You seem really unlucky with  your docs. Can't your GP help? Has the German doc actually examinec you? I know in the UK docs only give antibiotics as a last resort because of the increase in resistant microbes.

Well Kate- first I lost 500GBP to a private doctor who did an ultrascan and saw a lot of free-floating fluidsin my stomach. Their decision was that I should take some paracetamol (which seems mostly the answer to everything unfortunately). After that, I went to my GP and had a blood test. One week later I came to discuss the results and told him about the ultrascan etc, and he confirmed that he can see on my blood results that there is "an inflammation in your body, but that could be anything, you know. So I now decide to do...nothing, come again in a month and do another blood test".

Great., huh?
