The longer it is in the more potential for damage.  It's going to have to come out eventually, better now than after the damage is done.

I don't blame you Nic. You've got enough to deal with, moving and all. Safe travels!

Also, the damage done to my esophagus is 100%, the concern is aggravating the gastroparesis.

I am seeing an esophageal surgeon, one of the best in the world, before letting anyone operate on me. My GI doctor is concerned that more surgery could cause more problems and wants the consult for me to be sure it will help and not harm me more. That appt is on the 30th and I could be scheduled for removal the following week.

Mornin'

I'm being stubborn.  I don't want to turn over my food.  It is rebellion, I know.  I want the chance to change my mind to keep control, to hide.  It's all my nutty relationship with food and my body.  I love food!  I like to believe that I eat so much more than I do - it's my fantasy to keep for me. Writing here exposes me and I am a "fraud"  who just lusts over the idea of food. So I will keep yesterday and share today - it's progress for me.

Also if you are having reflux at night, you may want to chew a few Papaya enzymes from GNC before bed to clear out your pouch for better digestion. I used to have issues like this with my old band and would wake at night choking, but the papaya enzymes were a godsend, I used to chew them with over the counter Pepcid.

Edited to Add: You may want to consider changing surgeons, I had to do that to get a new band that works, you may want to get a second opinion on your band leak too.

Yikes!  Good for him and when it is good for him, it is good for us - right.  That is why I love to see long term DS'ers like Ms. Batt.  It downs my fears of my long term living with WLS.  Still I think Oh God, the innards, my innards !  I can't imagine having a band over a little pouch . . . my sleeved stomach.  Like I'd freak!  Good for him, good for us!!!

Sweet Day!

Ok, that makes sense, if you are belching this could mean gastritis or GERD. You may want to get on some type of PPI. in the meantime.

If you really want your band out, ALL insurances must cover removal if you are having complications or issues with even if Bariatric surgery is not covered, they must pay to remove it if you are having a complication.

Wishing you much success and if you need to stay on track feel free to post here, to track your daily calories and exerciselaugh

I had my LapBand removed a bit over a year ago, and revised to VSG.  I just wanted to wish you luck!  We did have a regular on this board that was a BOB, and she was very successful.  Hopefully, you will be the same!

My surgeon left the practice a while back . I was going in to get fills until I lost my job and insurance . I have now found a new job and not sure if insurance will cover any of it .  I don't have much restriction.  I was also told at my last visit that my port may be leaking .  I am just over all the surgery.  I know that there is a possibility that I will gain, but  I am still  326 pounds and I was 385 when I had the surgery .  The smallest I have been in  250 and then I got pregnant with my daughter and  have been at  300-326 for the last four years .   I don't want any other surgery. I want the band out and I want to gain as much education as I can on doing this on my own.  I have started belching a lot and having a lot of gas .  I am now worried about all of the esophagus issues I keep reading about.

Thanks so much for responding . laugh

Have you discussed this with your surgeon? How much does your fills cost? Do you have insurance? Do you have restriction? One thing to ponder, even if you have not reached goal weight, you will gain what you have lost back if you get your band removed, trust me on that one.

Have you considered the Sleeve or Bypass, if you have insurance? They do not require fills, but there may be a trade-off with lab work and critical vitamins for life, and they are not guaranteed to be effective forever, so there is no perfect tool out there yet..

Also if you are 8 years post op, have you had your band checked lately? If you are able to eat more it could be dilation issues rather than needing a fill, are you having any reflux? Sorry about all the questions, but yes the band requires maintenance, but so do the Bypass and Sleeve, it's just a different type of maintenance.

Also are you part of any support group online or locally, they really help you to stay on track, are you really doing all you need to be successful with your band? Are you exercising, following a healthy diet, etc, I would NOT give up on the band if there are no issues with it. You can jump start weight loss by recommitting yourself.

If you get your band removed, it will be much harder to lose weight, I hope you realize this, also the band sort of screws up our metabolism after years of living with it so it may be impossible to get back on track by removing it.

Topic: TUESDAY GRATEFUL POSTS

Good Morning everyone,

Hope your week is going well so far.    Mine is going fantastic.    You know the old saying " Life is what you make it"....it is so true for us everyday of our life.     We can make our life good by being grateful for what we have or make it miserable by focusing on things we don't have or want but don't really need.    Also we can make ourselves better by focusing on the weight that we have lost and how much healthier we are than before our WLS began than focusing on the negative...."I didn't reach my goal weight....I am a failure" kind of attitude.    Life truly is what WE make it.    We can chose to be a positive person or not so positive.    I am so grateful today that I try not to focus too much on negative things.    This world in which we live has enough negative.    All the news on TV is filled with bad and negative things.   Our WLS journey will go so much easier for you if you focus on positive things....don't compare YOUR journey to that of others either or you will be sitting yourself up for failure.     Our bodies are ALL different and the weight will come off differently for us all.    So PLEASE don't set yourself up for failure by doing that.    Not sure why I am sharing this with you today....guess someone needs to hear this.    I am so grateful today that we are ALL different and that God has designed us all to be our own person.     Grateful for my life, my WLS journey. and the chance that we all have to share our journey with others and give them lots of encouragement and support.    Grateful for you reading this now even if you don't respond.    Grateful for my health.    PLEASE share if you will what you are grateful for today.    Have a blessed day and Chose to make your life AMAZING today.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

Topic: Tip for today: How to Get a Good Lap Band Fill

How to Get a Good Lap Band Fill

First off, fills are usually given 6 weeks to two months after having lap band surgery.  Most people will need a fill, a few do not.  Talk to your doctor to determine if you are in need of a fill.  If you are needing to have a fill, which is just a short way of saying having saline added to the band, this article tells you what you need to know as far as prepping to get a successful fill.

Water is your friend.  You need to be well hydrated when you get a fill.  Make sure you are getting six to eight full glasses for several days prior to your fill.  Critically important is to make sure that you have enough fluids on the morning of your fill.  If you fly in make sure to drink eight ounces of water for every hour your journey takes.  You can bring an empty water bottle through the security check point and get it filled on the plane.

Do not eat any solid foods within six hours of the fill and do not have a big or later dinner on the evening before.  Fluids the night before are indicated if you've been having any trouble with slipping or reflux.  Nothing but fluids should be consumed following the dinner.  Any food left in the pouch at the time of fill will make it impossible to obtain a good fluoroscope image or fill.  You'll still pay for the fill, so make it worthwhile by following these directions.

Avoid cold liquids an hour before the fill because they can cause the stomach to shrink and mess up the fluoro reading.  Room temp is fine.

It takes about two hours post fill for swelling to develop.  When it does you may need to come back if you are over filled.  If you travel a great distance it's best to stay overnight if possible.  This is in case you are overfilled a little fluid can be extracted before you leave.  Overfills are not common, but they do happen.  If you were home before you found out, you'd need to travel back to have the unfill performed.  This is especially important if you are going to Mexico or other country to get your fills.  Last minute plan fares are super expensive.

Following your fill you should only consume fluids for at least twenty four hours.  This gives the stomach time to heal and get used to the tighter band.   After the fluids a day of soft food should be undertaken and then finally solid foods.

When you should not get filled.  If you are having any trouble such as PB or vomiting with your current fill more often than once per week at the most or if there is any regular pain or if you are unable to eat or drink properly as it is.  A fill may worsen things.  As always a doctor needs to be consulted.  You might even need to have your current fill reduced if you are suffering from these things.

Other things about fills that are good to know.

If you are a woman, do not get a fill during or just before your menstrual period as the water retention will cause the fluoroscope and fill to be inaccurate.

You should live with a fill at least two weeks before deciding you need more.  If you are maintaining a healthy weight loss, that is the ultimate indicator rather than a feeling restriction usually.  Remember what you eat is very important.  If you are choosing soft foods, junk foods, sweets, high calorie liquids, the restriction will have little impact.  Only solid foods are useful for telling if the band is filled the right amount.  Try a test meal of 2-4 oz of meat and one half cup veggies.  You should be able to eat this and stay satisfied for three to four hours.  Also remember to eat regularly.  If you are hungry five hours after lunch it's not because your band isn't tight enough, it's because your really hungry and need to eat.  Regular meals help you avoid snacks and convenient calories that sabotage your weight loss efforts with lap band and work to normalize your metabolism.

Review the eating / food guidelines before fills.  The fuller your band, the more it's necessary to be very strict with your eating.  Things you might have eaten before will now cause discomfort or PB's.  You really need to learn to recognize when you've eaten enough.  Common signs you've eaten enough can include tightness in the chest or a feeling of fullness, a hiccup, a burp, etc.  When you see these signs it's time to stop eating.  Continuing to eat that this point can cause PB or slimming or other undesirable consequences not limited to, but including not losing weight.
