So those that have positive experiences with the band are the only ones that should b posting?! Oh come on! This forum is for EVERYONE that has the band. It is not limited to those w/o band problems.

So u think that the person that started the thread should just keep her mouth shut or post on the main forum also???

This forum is here to inform. There are ppl out there that come here with questions regarding band problems. Ppl on here need to be honest with them. The band has worked very well for some on this forum. I just wish I heard more of these success stories.

I realize every time I post my experiences on the band I get haters that accuse me of "band bashing". However..........IT IS MY EXPERIENCE! I wi**** was different........but IT IS WHAT IT IS! I am limiting my diet, going low-fat/lower-carb, getting fills..........but I have yet to have any success with the band!

I don't know how many times on here I have seen bandsters accused of being responsible for their band problems. I am the first one to admit.........SOME ARE. Those that get the band and don't get fills should NOT expect it to work. However, those of us that are making the effort to work with the band rules and getting regular fills should be seeing some progress from the band! Or am I incorrect on that one also?!

Why would u feel that the forum is just for positive posts??? The forum should b for REALISTIC posts!

Many ppl post about their experiences with the band. Why should I not post mine as well? Don't u think that pre-ops should have access to this info as well so they can make an informed decision?

The one starting the thread has a problem with the band. She shouldn't be made to feel that she is alone with that! She most certainly is NOT.

I do wish u  much luck with your band!!!

Topic: RE: 8 months and still NOT loosing weight

Unfortunatly some ppl never reach a good restriction. Most Drs. do NOT tell patients that in advance. I had mine in Nov. also and have had 6 fills and still no restriction! I have lost about 43 lb. but other than the first 2 wks. when I had no appetite b/c of the swelling after surgery I have done it all on my own by dieting. I feel like I have paid $15,000 to put myself on a diet!!! I would NEVER get another CRAP BAND!!!

Topic: RE: To band or not to band that is the question?
Unfortunatly the band does NOT work for everyone. Some ppl have slips/port problems/leaks/etc. Some never have a good restriction. If u want the band just follow the band rules, keep going for fills, and hope for the best.

Good luck!
Topic: RE: check placement of band
So sorry to hear about your problem. How long have u had your band???
Topic: RE: can anyone offer pros & cons to lap band
U really should also post this on the revision forum as well. Soooooo many ppl revise from the band. If u follow the band forum u will notice that almost every day someone new is posting about a slip/port problem/leak............etc. There appear to be a LOT of 2nd n sometimes 3rd surgeries with the band!!!

Also, one thing most Drs. will never tell u is that some ppl  never reach a good restriction. They are either too loose or too tight! Never find that "sweet spot".

There are those that reach goal and maintain without havin a 2nd surgery but from what I have seen that is extremely rare!

Someone posted a response to u to just stay on the band board I beleive. They said b/c u will hear negative things on the other boards. That does happen on occasion but there is a reason negative things are said..................NEGATIVE THINGS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE BAND!!!

Best of luck to u in whatever surgery choice u make.

Topic: RE: Mexico Surgery Cost
From what I read on the posts most lap banders have to have at least a 2nd surgery so I would NOT recommend the band for anyone self-pay!!!

Maria,

I run a large support group online and in person and we have quite a few banders, as well as just about every other surgery represented. Your experience is not that unique in my experience with other banders, but as you say everyone has their own journey. I would hope that others would applaud your success as you do theirs.

Wishing you continued success on your journey.

Thank you so much Barbara. And congrats on your success!!!

Topic: RE: I'm hungry.
As prek-3 said, the support groups can be very helpfull! U should definatly take advantage of that.

Do NOT eat solids now. U need to continue with the diet the Dr. gave u as u continue to heal.

Yogurt will come soon enough. For now u might want to try some different varieties of protein. Finding a good protein can be a challange. Lean Dessert, Nectar have some of my favorite flavors. Jay Robb is good. I buy the vanilla and just add my Davinci SF syrups to it to create a variety of flavored protein drinks.

I would also add protein to sf pudding.

Good luck!
Topic: RE: What is your relationship with food and has it changed?
I now view food completely differently now. Pre-op I ate whatever I wanted, as long as it tasted good. Loved potatoes, could eat them 3 meals a day! Loved my rice and pasta.

When I went on my pre-op diet I was told to do low-fat/low-carb. I did and have continued this. I now read labels, which I never did b4. It is very seldom that I have potatoes, rice or pasta. Nothing carbonated. Very seldom do I have caffine.

I am 8 mos. post-op now and have continued this. I still have no restriction, so other than the 1st 2 wks. after surgery when I had no appetite b/c of the swellling............this is how I have lost the wieght.

Of course b/c of this post I will yet again be accused of "band bashing". It is not. It is my experience. Some of u have had very different experiences and for those that have been successfull with the band I couldn't be happier for u! Unfortunatly it doesn't work for everyone.

Topic: RE: 5 years out. Starting over

Unfortunatly some ppl never do. Some are either too loose or too tight. Never a happy medium There are those that never find their "sweet spot". It is sad that these are things that do not seem to be disclosed to a patient pre-op!!!

I hate to say it but if u have been trying to reach a good restriction for 5 yrs. and have not then u probabally never will. Might b time to consider a revision?

Best of luck to u!

Topic: RE: Will company reimburse for a defective band
Well I wouldn't just keep the band in like that. It will do u no good. No fill =No restriction. More than likely it is not a manufacturers defect in the band. Punctures  generally occur during fills.

However there was one lady that posted a mo. or so ago and her actual band was leaking and had it replaced or was about to. She was negotiating with the band manufacturer as to what portion they would pay (why it would be any less than 100% I don't know but apparantly this was going to be an issue.

Also, from my understanding, if there is a defect in the band it has to be mailed back to the manufacturer. But the taking pictures beforehand I think is a good idea in case it is claimed it was "lost" in the mail!!!

Topic: RE: Lap-Band Revision vs Sleeve
Definatly get the sleeve!!! 2 years of getting fills and unfills has been a waste of time. Unfortunatly, some ppl never reach that happy medium, and of those that do, sometimes it can be lost completely. This is why I hate it when ppl post on here "all u have to do is get fills and follow the band rules and u will lose a signifigant amount of weight. NOT always true!!!

Topic: RE: Lap-Band Goes empty after 3-4 month fill
These appear to happen frequently. Most of the time it is a result of the Dr./NP puncturing it doing an adjustment from what I understand.

Not being a doctor, but I would check to see if the MAO inhibitor has weight gain side effects.  I was on similar meds at one time and it did increase my weight while on them.  I am not sure what those other two are for but meds for Bi Polar effect the brains chemicals and influence weight gain.  Check WebMD for side effects of that mao inhibitor.  Being banded and eating correctly, you should lose significantly.  These meds may interfer with the chemistry of weight loss.

"Being banded and eating correctly, you should lose significantly."

NO! This is simply NOT true. SOME that are banded and eat correctly lose significantly! Ufortunatly this is NOT the case with most. There are some very successfull bandsters out there. An example I always use is Bette. She has lost an amazing amount of weight and kept it off many yrs. There are many more bandsters out there that never lose much at all.

I have only lost 35 lbs.  I am on Seroquel, Trileptal, Trazodone, Effexor, Paxil and Levothroxine.

I am bipolar too.  That is why I chose the lapband.  I also don't feel I have restriction, but my dr. isn't too happy if I come back without losing weight, so I have not gone to see him for a few months.  I could not have the malabsorbtion issues that other surgeries offer.  I can't change my meds because it took years to get where my mental health is controlled and I am as stable as a bipolar can be.  My body would eventually reject all other meds. It is very frustrating.  My cousin had RNY in December and is within 10 pounds of her goal weight.  I feel like such a failure.

I used to think that people who gained weight on the meds where just eating too much.  Now I am not so sure.
Please go see your Dr.! If u have no restriction it's the same as having no band. Will NOT facilitate weight loss!!!

How many fills have u had? Keep going back for fills till u reach restriction! If your Dr. gets an attitude with u b/c u haven't lost weight find another Dr.!

Connors_Grandma
Although some MH drugs can increase appetite since u have no restriction that wouldnt be the problem.

How many fills have u  had? How many cc's?

MeltingMama I beleive posted several mos. ago that they were not able to get life insurance b/c of the WLS.

If you abused your surgery then get therapy to help you the 2nd time around.

IF THE F'ing BAND WORKS FOR ME DON'T HATE.  I WON'T HATE YOU IF YOU COULD HAVE A MALABSORPTION SURGERY OR THEIR STOMACH CUT AWAY WHEN I COULDN'T.

Jesus, have these people no other place to go or anything else to do? I'm starting to live life again.  I'm freakin' loving it and I pray my band keeps working and doesn't give me a ton of problems.  BE FREAKIN' HAPPY FOR ME.  I was at death's door due to weight and a vasculitis disease.  This week I've been boating, swimming in the ocean, playing in the pool, shopping and having dinner with my best friend.  6  months ago I could barely get out of bed!

If you're telling your horror story with the band I think it's important (as is telling the success stories).  But don't bash people that made a life altering choice toward the band.  Maybe I feel the same way about someone that had RNY (I don't).  Should I go bash them?  NO!  I want them to succeed!!!

Ok...goodnight :)

I don't get it! How is it that Melting Mama
"bashes me for having the band"???
She went to a medical convention............and posted a report from there............that's bashing???

"I'm starting to live life again.  I'm freakin' loving it and I pray my band keeps working and doesn't give me a ton of problems.  BE FREAKIN' HAPPY FOR ME."

Well I'm sure she is happy for u........as am I. No one on here wants ppl to fail with their WLS! Nor did anyone suggest that u should have had their WLS.

U are very happy with your surgery and it is working well for u at this point. I sincerely hope that continues...........but it doesn't work that way for everybody. True, some ppl don't comply..............but others do and are NOT successfull with the band and pre-ops should have access to that info BEFOREHAND so that they can make an informed decision for themselves. Not based on if an individual on OH likes the band or not (aka "bashes the band"). Based on current medical studies!
