Topic: RE: Checking In
Well at the 6 month mark I am down 110.  I break a ton of rules and follow just as many.  I dont really exercise.  I am active but Im not running or doing 5k's or anything like that.  I fish on the great lakes for 10-12 hrs straight not an easy task before in 3-4 ft waves,  I canoed for 8 hrs a day this summer for 11 days.  I work around the house and currently am carrying 19 credits in nursing school so I am busy.  Food wise still doing lots of yogurts Kashi go lean, cheeses, cottage cheese, and meats.  no potatoes or breads and the only pasta I have had was in a can of soup.  I do like a beer now and then but 1 and Im happy 2 and Im too drunk to drive.  Turkey taste great 3 bites Im good 4 bites Im puking cause it sticks.  No junk food whatsoever. No hunger cravings but lots of head cravings.  I have had a few weeks of stalling and days of yo yo weights but it always comes off. still on hb pills but diabetes is gone. In general no regrets.  I am in 38's instead of 50's and xl instead of 4xl.  I take my supplements, drink plenty of water and watch my proteins.  I eat around 1300-1500 a day in calories.  NO junk except beer after my weekly exams.
Topic: RE: A work in progress
i believe when we go through such changes self perception in ourselves vs others perception of us is rarely on the same page.  I am down 103 now and I still dont feel like I am but others say wow you look great.  I say thanks but sometimes I think man I must have looked like hell before.  I dont recognize myself anymore I have to take a second look quite often.  I too want to drop another 40-50 but that still seems like a mountainous achievement.  I have really worked on giving up worrying or stressing over the scale, and concentrate on eating healthy food in healthy amounts and let the rest work itself out as long as the body improves
Topic: RE: Is this Normal
good comments.  I decided Im not getting on scaled for a week or two and just eat what I am supposed too.  clothes and face seem thinner as do arms and legs and stomach cant tell cause it looks like a raisen.  overall I feel good so Ill let the process take care of itself.  I have eaten a few days in the 1200 calorie range but Im 265 pounds and should get to about 215-220 would be a good goal for me so I aint complaining.  usuallly i eat right around 1000 a day give or take and last labs were great so more informational inquiry thinking how weird my body is.  I did try some Kashi go lean,  not bad for snack or meal.  so I added another food to the regiment.
Topic: RE: Is this Normal
I track my food pretty close and eat no junk.  My weight loss has been good.  I have not gone over 1200 calories once and am usually 1000 or less in the 4 months since surgery but the scale has stopped and I have now gained 3-4 pounds,  I am certainly not in panic mode just curious what the theories are as to why. water? body adjusting?  I am not cheating as I have been brutally honest with my food.  constipation? I dont think I am  I fell like I am losing I have gone from a 4x to a 1x.  I am not working out just much more active so its not muscle.  water intake is good just curious
Topic: RE: Protein
In my program the golden rule is nothing over 10gr sugar or 10gr fat,  that rules out about 85% of the yogurts and protein bars, shakes and so called health snacks out there but since we are tossing protein around, here are a few things I do eat.  Diet hot chocolate with milk or powdered milk or water.  I generally do 2 packs which is 50 calories and a sweetn low- adding in some 1% milk or powder ups the protein and adds 50-90 cals for a total under 150.   I eat Pure Protein bars from walmart 20gr protein 200 calories under the 10gr of fat and sugars, I like the chewy choc chip.  I drink a walmart brand protein powder 26 gr protein a scoop usually vanilla with frozen fruit 3/4cup sweet n low, water or milk, a single sugar free drink pack usually orange, ice and blend.  i also always liked potato chips with cottage cheese so now I eat special k cracker chips and cottage cheese and get in 8-10 gr protein doing that. I eat lunch meat usually turkey, light miracle whip., egg salad and cheeses, yoplait light, and a few nuts here and there and the occasional small piece of jerky.  I eat a little chicken and some salmon which is great on the grill but most meats I have to eat really slow and really small bites or i will foam up. My tastes have changed since surgery and even during recovery somedays nothing tastes like I want it, doesnt tast bad its just kind of blah so I try to change it up but if nothings working cottage cheese and special k crackers (i usually eat about 10 and 1/3 cup of cottage)or yogurt and string cheese are always good to me.
Topic: RE: Protein
Good luck to you as well.  I started hitting the sandwich thins as well but I can only eat a half of one usually with a little egg salad or turkey.  I eat 3-4 yogurts a day mostly activia as it is below 10g sugar and fat.  I wish protein bars were a little more protein and less sugars and calories
Topic: RE: Protein
Thanks for the feed back.  As I mentioned trying to find my normal whatever that is.  That is why hearing from those of you in the trenches living a life post surgery is so helpful.  I expect everyone has their habits good and bad and trying to find the balance makes me a bit apprehensive at times for concern of returning to a pattern of poor choices. Of course I am a long way away from eating a whole pizza for dinner or a sleeve of oreos for breakfast but I am not going back down that road.
Topic: RE: Head hunger, real hunger... How to know the difference?
all of my hunger thus far has been in my head.  The desire to taste chew and satiate however I resist it.  I eat no potatoes, pasta. rice or bread except now I have been hitting the special k cracker chips 8-15 at a time with cottage cheese.  I stay away from all sweets that are not sugar free.  My fix is a protein shake, or bar and diet hot chocolate with milk or milk powder and a sweetner.  I really dont feel hungry, i dont get low sugars, i dont get the shakes and the only urges I get are typically for bad foods so I dismiss them as head hunger.  I have read that some have the hunger urge return after 4-6 monhs others never do.  My diet plan has been in a constant state of change as I am trying to find my normal.  I try to document everything I eat and stay under 1000 calories for me as I am only in month four.  I have no troubles with that as long as my proteins are in the 70 range.  I do not get hungry but I do have cravings that ebb and flow daily,  I try to ingnore them or accopet them and understand that overtime some of those foods can return in small amounts but I am not so sure I trust myself to allow them in now.
Topic: RE: Protein
I am now down 98 pounds.  I am instructed to keep my proteins at 70 grams range and limit other foods to keep calories down which I do.  I dont exercise as much as I should and weight loss wise I have no complaints.  I am wondering what you others have done for proteins.  I eat cottage cheese, string cheese, yogurts, small amounts of eggs and small pieces of meats, some chili, lunchmeats I hate greek yogurt it flat out sucks.  I have no problem eating unless I try and get 70 grams of protein in by eating meats and cheeses.  I cant nor do I want to eat that much.  My struggle is in my dieticians advice she does not like protein shakes or protein bars, she feels they are expensive, too much sugar and do not promote healthy eating.  I add 200 calories and 25 gr protein for my bar or choice and 250 and 25gr for my shake (6 ice cubes 1 cup frozen fruit, 1 scoop protein powder, sweetn low, and sugar free drink with water to make liquid for about 24 oz.  I usually have one or the other each day.  My calorie count stays around 650-850 give or take 100.  Quite honestly eating is a pain in the ass and a proteinbar or shake is just easier and I like the taste but I suppose long term the goal is to eat normal.  Normal for me seems to not be normal for any nonsurgery person as everyone aroung me is eatinbg brats and beer.   I also have not stuck to the 3 meals no snacks routine I again am not able to eat enough in my opinion in 3 meals so I rely on calories and protein amounts and eat 4-6 times a day smaller amounts.  Everything I eat is under 10gr of fat 10 gr of sugar except the 2 beers I have had this summer.  So can you offer and criticisms or comments, flaws etc short and long term.  I know all about the alcohol dangers so dont need input on that mainly foods, proteins, ,meal times, any snacking what ever you do that gets you through the day.  I have been much more active but I have not been hitting the pavement like I should, working on that.  I am very happy with 100 pounds in 4 months just want to not relapse, stay true and honest with myself and be healthy and happy. drinkin plenty of liquids no issues there and eat some form of veggies each day in small amounts.  All my labs and a1c are excellent and I am no longer diabetic.
Topic: RE: Almost 4 months
On the 12th of this month I will be at 4 months.  I am currently down 82 pounds.  I am no longer diabetic based on A1C and am off 14 pills.  I still take a few but much less.  Everything is easier as far as movement, sleeping, chores. even tying my shoes which I can now do in almost any position and still breathe.  I can now see how constant vigalance is needed for me to continue.  It is easy to make poor choices and allow calories and food take over.  Food is everywhere and permiates into every social event, meeting, family gathering.  I nibble on healthy food once in awhile but in general the ease at which I could snack all day is there.  I have had my foamy attacks and learned quickly they were my fault.  Spicy food is delicious but is off the radar for awhile as it does not stay down. My wardrobe is a mess I have tons of clothes that are either too big or too small and I  seem to be losing some areas of fat at different levels.  Heat is less of an issue.  I worked outside in 101 degree heat, while it was warm it was tolerable where pre surgery I would have been a mess.  Still my lingering concern is to not be a failure, so vigalance and commitment and discipline to follow the rules are what I think of when food is around me.  I think I am changing my  relationship with food but I am not so niave to think I can change 20+ years of poor eating in my adult years will be corrected by 4 months of post surgery restrictions.  I work at it every day and somedays I hardly notice I am restricted other days I wish I did not need surgery but I tend not to dwell on that.  Mostly I am just thankful to healthy at least my version of healthy.  So thats where I am at, still losing, still learning and still alive.
Topic: RE: Attn all motorcycle riders (cruisers)
Based on my restrictions you should be ok but riding any motorcycle at three weeks is going way outside surgery reccomendations.  Any accident, having to pick up bike or just the trauma to the abdominal muscles at three weeks is taking an unnecesssary risk that could land one back in emergency surgery. Fixing a tare or causing an undiagnosed leak is a life threatening issue that is why in most cases there is a six week wait.  I would not reccommend it.
Topic: RE: Had Surgery
Good to hear, follow you discharge instructions, drink you fluids, eat the right foods and get some walking in and you will be in good shape
Topic: RE: Is it stuck or the pouch just doesn't like it?????
I have had this a few times and it is either issue but usually its because I ate too fast or took to big of bite.  I puke and sometimes a lot and then I am fine.  I may eat the same thing a few days later and am fine with it as long as i slow down or take smaller bites.  I get it about 1 a week and once I puke I drink extra and can resume eating solids when its time to eat again.  Not having burping issues but do get the foamies which is 95% of what I puke. I have also puked from stuff that dissagrees with me.  It is usually short lived. 90% of my meals are fine it is that one moment where I dont pay attention on one or two bites.

Walk as much as you can and then walk some more to get rid of gas pain.
Topic: RE: Where Is Everyone
I just have a habit of mentally looking at someone and thinking if they have ever been fat, had surgery, what they eat, how they stay thin or how they feel about being fat.  I find it interesting the roads that led us where we are and the paths that take us elsewhere.  How the end result was and what measure of success did you have.

Topic: RE: New to OH and Men's Forum
Welcome.  This is a good place for info, encouragement and inspiration.  I myself am only two months post op and have found this a good spot to check in often for all those things.  Good luck with the process.
Topic: RE: Where Is Everyone
I had just finished my last class and my last report which happened to be on pernicious anemia, which led me to wondering about another issue.  In my research I found that back in the 80's there were thousands of WLS performed but fast forward to today there are 200,000+ performed annually.  Statistically 70% are women so that still leaves 60,000 men each year.  We have 10-20 active members on the mens forum so where are the other 59,980 annually hanging out and getting info?  I realize some come and go givin the new status of their surgery but at 60,000 new male surgeries a year there still are quite a few guys that are not here. Perhaps I have too much time on my hands now that school is over for the summer.

 hello nice to meet you
Topic: RE: Post weightloss surgery...What foods don't sit well with you??
I had a little pork and a bite of corn it didnt go well.  Had a few shrimp that did not work out well and meatloaf is off limits yet.  I am not quite two months out. I have not tried any sweets, bread or potatos. I can eat chicken if moist, eggs, fish, yogurt, turkey and cheese of various types in small amounts.
Topic: RE: Beef Jerky and Broasted skinless chicken
I still have issues with meat,  Ground turkey is ok if I take my time as is tuna, most fish, and canned chicken but I really got to take my time.  I eat a lot of yogurt and a fair amount of cottage cheese.  Chicken wing meat is ok too but again eatiing real slow otherwise I get foamies.  I have just had a craving for beef jerky so another 2-3 weeks I will try a bit see how it goes.  I am only 6 weeks out so still pretty early so i try to take it easy on the new stomach.   I just spoke with my nut she said eat any protein I want but eat it carefully and always watch sugars and fats.  I am only taking in about 700 calories right now so I dont eat much besides proteing and a daily applesauce/ and 100 oz of liquid
Topic: RE: Quick Question
My nutrtionist also stays away from them as part of the overall program.  Their reasons are they can be expensive, some contain lots of sugars, some are high in calories.  The recommended alternative is milk powder. I asked her if I can drink them and I was told yes but choose wisely and incorporate the calories into overall consumption which I have been, although overall caloric intake is a little vague anyway.   Bottom line I would rather drink a chocolate protein drink that has half of my recommended proteins then a glass of milk infused with more milk.  You are the only person that I have encountered other than myself that has a nutritionist/program that recommends this practice on no protein powders.  Check the sugars, check the price if you care, and check caloric amount as well as fats etc. and then share it with your nutritionist.  They are there to help not punish.
Topic: RE: ? vitimans
I take a b12 sublingual, if you have had RNY you have lost the intrinsic factor to absorb b12 so it has to be supplemented in some form.  If not, overtime it can become very  dangerous and create anemia issues.  I take a multivitamen,  and a calcium with vit d supplement all chewables not gummies.  Other than that I am good to go for now.  I would concur scheduled blood analysis is the only way to be sure and should be part of your program.
Topic: RE: How much did you eat
I actually get worried I may be eating too much.  I stay up late becasue the house is quiet and I am studying then and I have a urge not sure if its hunger for something to eat even if its a cheese stick or a piece of shaved lunch meat but they only want me eating three meals a day and snacks are a glass of milk.  the theory here is they believe the snacking habit is what led people down the this road in the first place.  I get the theory but sometimes even in my early stage of this it gets a little cumbersome.  I know I know discipline and good habits need to be established to learn life long good habits.  Just a pain in the ass is what Im saying.  I will continue on try to up it a bit and email my nut.  I dont really sip much at least not like I did the first 3 weeks.  Im not gulping but I can take several small sips rather quickly, rest and begin again,  getting in 64oz minimum is quite easy now.
Topic: RE: How much did you eat
Just curious as to how much you remeber eating during your early days and how much it has changed to what you eat now.  I am getting enough protein and eat a few veggies mixed in and I am averaging 550-650 calories.  Im not hungry although the thought of eating late at night does tempt me from time to time.  I wonder how I will progress and to what level of calories.  My goal weight set by me is somewhere around 210 which would require me losing 153 pounds.  I do know to be at that weight before I had to watch what I ate and work out a  but I was 22 then.  Just wonder if the rule of thumb of 100 calories per 10lbs of weight is applicable after surgery years down the road.
