I am always cooking middle-easter, armenian, persian, french food all rich in taste, texture and fat. you could substitute oil, butter, fat to canola oil for cooking and olive oil for salads and dressings.
Also if you are not the one cooking at home, eat the food with moderations and/or skip the very rich/fatty foods. Persian and middle eastern salalds are very tastee and healthy for you. Easy with the persian rice please have 1/2 cup the most. Meat, try to avoid lamb meat and if you have to eat it have 2 oz and substitute with protein drink or bar. Watch out mostly for fat in the persian food and substittue when you are not too sure about the meal.
I lost my weight eating my ethnic food after surgery and still do with no problems. I just have to cut the portions and avoid some foods.
