Good for you!  Congratulations!  I hope you had fun.  They may even offer what we call an "Experienced Rider Course" which is a one day class where you ride your own bike.  Some of the drills are basically the same and some are a little harder - but it is still in a low risk parking lot environment.  So, once you get a few months of riding in low risk streets and have been able to practice with your bike, consider taking an ERC.  Maybe that is the "reminder" you signed up for in March.  Either way -have fun with it!

Thanks for the advise Matt, I just completed a 3 day couse at my local community College. I enjoyed it so much that I have signed up for a reminder in March. I just put Betsy away, my husband is planing to do some work on her this winter.

Looking foward to next hears riding season!

    Hi Angie:

Congratulations on the new scoot!  The Kawi's are nice bikes (I have 2) and the 500 will be a great bike for you.  I am a MSF RiderCoach, so I am naturally going to advise you to check with your local DMV and/or bike shops to lear where you can take the Basic Rider Course.  This will consist of one or two nights of classroom learning and 2 days on an approved range where you will learn the basics of riding a motorcycle.  I highly recommend you take the course and not learn from a friend.  The sport of motorcycling is exhilerating, fun but brings with it a lot of risk.  Taking the course will help prepare you as a rider to accept those risks and hopefully manage the risks using some very specific strategies.  Plus, your instructor will show you some great riding techniques.

I would check into it now and see when you can sign up for 2011.  Here in Michigan, I work for a program that is sponsored by a local community college.  We typically open registration online the end of March and it is filled up for the entire summer by the end of April.

Ride safe and ride often (once you get your endorsement )

    Matt

Hi my name is Angie and I am a new bike rider. My husband's bike club friend blessed me with her 2001 Kawasaki ex500. I couldn't believe how she just told my husband to come pick it up for me. It was a very excitting night for me and I haven't stop grinning yet! I haven't been out yet because my husband has not given my baby a tuneup yet and it needs one badly. So I it looks as if I won't be ridding this year at all. But the important part is that I finnaly have my own bike and next spring I will be out there looking for buddies. Any tips for me are greatly appreciated as I am new to motorcycles.

    Hi Matt!

I check in on this board every month or so.  I'm just as guilty about checking in here, lol. If it is nice, I am riding.

So yes, my new addiction is my motorcycle, but it has been since I brought her home.

So far this year I've done about 2600 or so miles since April began.  I went down to GA for a few days and then wound my way back home through the mountains.   I also go up to MI often, as I have riding buds up there.     I am on BON also thats (bikerornot.com) good place to meet people and set up rides.  It says it's a dating site, but it is used more for networking and making new riding buds.

I'm heading to KY for Memorial Day wknd, then just to a whole lot of local shindigs, here in Ohio and Michigan, a couple in IN also.

Then in July I am heading to NY, with my riding club, Women In The Wind, for our Summer National Conference.   I'm going to stick around a few more days after that, I got friends that want to citify me.. lol   I am skeered of that!

    rubber side down, peace, Vickie

    Hi Vickie!

I check in on this board every month or so.  It has gone pretty quiet over the last couple of years.  I don't know if it is harder to find since they've redesigned OH or what.

Being a WLS patient, you realize we have a tendency for addictive behaviors - so I must confess an addiction to motorcycles.  I have three I ride regularly.  A cruiser for traveling, a sport that I ride to work, bopping around town and taking to the twisties and a dual sport for the same and a few trails here and there.

I'm getting pumped to ride out to New York again for the annual Americade rally.  We went to Daytona in March and hit Deal's Gap on the way home.

Have you ever attended the races at Mid Ohio?  We've attended a few of the superbike races and would like to see the vintage races if it would work into the calendar.

    Ride safe!

who is all still riding or is a new rider?  and where are you heading this year?

    I ride an ole 82 Virago, 750 , she's old but I love her!

since the board isn't happening much,  please contact me, maybe we'll meet along the road and go - share a oversized meal.

I'm 5.5 yrs out and still can't eat much --- sharing works!

    peace, Vickie

I dipped into my 401K last autum for my surgery just before the market plumeted.  Had I not taken the money I would have lost the bulk of it.  Good move on my  part.  Do what ever you have to to take the steps you need to achieve this wonderful recovery phase of your life.  There will always be motorcycles.  There will not always be a you!  Hugs, Nan

Thanks, I Iisted it on craigslist today.  Hopefully it will sell quick.

I have a honda shadow 600 too.  I never thought about being able to ride a different bike after surgery.  I hate riding my husbands sporster but might like it more after I loose a few pounds.  He'd love to have a new one anyway.  Maybe we could get him one and I'll ride his.

With winter just around the corner I shouldn't miss it too much anyway. . .

    Thanks,

    Jill

Topic: RE: Should I sell my bike????

Ouch. That is a tough one.  If I were in your shoes, I would sell the bike, have the surgery, lose the weight, then find a bike that will fit you comfortably at that time.  I know right now, my bike (honda shadow 600) fits me good, but what I want is my parents 96 harley nostalgia.  However, with that bike, it is uncomfortable because of my weight.  The backrest as well as the size of the tank end up hurting me a little.

Good luck with whatever you choose. Think of it as by getting the surgery now, you are adding many more riding seasons in the future.

Topic: Should I sell my bike????
Just curious to get everyone' s opinion. . .

When I met my husband 5 years ago he already had his Sportster.  After one ride on the back, I knew I needed to get my own.  Not only was it way too uncomfortable on the back of his, I knew that I'd enjoy it 100x over if I had control of the bike.  I took classes the next spring, got my m license and bought a starter bike.  Last summer we rode almost every weekend and I upgraded to a Honda shadow.   This summer we've been way too busy and maybe ride once a month. . .

My insurance policy has an exclusion for WLS, and after exhausting the appeal process with no success, I've come to realize my only option is self pay.   I've been researching for months and found a surgeon in Mexico I feel comfortable with.  However, since we are having cash flow issues (along with everyone else in the country), I would have to finance the surgery with a down-payment.

I'm considering selling my bike to cover the down-payment and travel costs but I am having some reservation about how much I'll miss riding.  Anyone have any opinion about the benefits of WLS vs not having my own bike?
Topic: RE: Is anybody out there?
Quite possibly we could do one on this board.  I have some leather pants that would virtually fall around my ankles if I put them on today.  I also have an awesome fringed jacket that I would hate to think is history for me.  fortunately for me I have a friend who does alterations!  But in my local wls support group we have a clothing exchange.  As the weight falls off, the need arises for new clothes.  I have a closet filled with "gladrags" from my wls angel and others who "passed" them to me.  I've been passing mine along too.  It's such fun!  I don't think it would fare well to see you in anything but your manly biker garb! lol

Topic: RE: Is anybody out there?

I am guessing that after WLS I will still want to remain in guy's leathers. But a leather exchange would be great.  May have to look around to see if any leather shops in the area do that.

Topic: RE: Is anybody out there?
Riding is sooo much smoother these days.  Hey maybe we can start a leater exchange here!  just a thought! lol mine's a Vulcan 750!

Just dropping my 2 cents in. I have a motorcycle (Honda Shadow 600 vlx).   It is nice, but has a little problem with pulling my weight.  Hopefully, next riding season I will be able to scoot around much easier.  (may need to new leathers though).
Topic: RE: Is anybody out there?
Wow, Nat, look at you!  You are doing so great and look wonderful!  Isn't this the greatest adventure?  I've ridden a bit.  It's been way too hot.  I rode with my crew to Gulfport Mississippi a couple of Sundays ago.  We went to the Blowfly Inn for lunch.  Lots of Sun, Sand and Sweat!  But couldn't wipe the grins off our faces.  Have to remember to pack the dental floss for those pesky little bugs that end up in our teeth lol!  I don't hang out on the boards so much.  I like the OFF the best but can't deal with all the drama.  There's enough in my own life. Know what I mean?  I am doing well.  Still fighting the urge to eat emotionally.  But ever reminded my doc fixed my stomach not my head!  Sending hugs your way today, Marie
P.S.  Do you guys FaceBook?  I'm Nannyre2U there as well.  I'm able to monitor that site more readily.

Hey! I've been thinking about you -- I've not seen you on any of the boards lately.  Doing OK? And doing much riding?
I hope the reason there aren't any recent posts here is because folks are out riding! I know that's where I'd like to be.
We've had a few nice (albeit short) trips this summer -- I've only logged about 3K miles total -- no time or $$ for more.
    How about you?
