Meat flavored protein shake

I am considering bariatric surgery and the thought of having to drink milk and protein shakes makes me want to gag already. I can't stand the taste of milk. And while once every year or two I might enjoy a chocolate malted frappe (milk shake for those not in New England). I don't crave milk shakes nor enjoy any other than chocolate ones.

How can I make Turkey, Beef, Pork or Chicken stew flavored protein shakes? I LOVE the flavor of meats. I can see myself making a stew of some form that is high in protein, then running it through a blender.

But if I find out that after surgery I have to live on protein powder and milk, I won't go down this path because I won't be able to get this stuff down.

So I myself am 5 months post-op from having the sleeve and I was worried about the same things you are, at first it was a struggle but now i've got a routine down. So what I did during my liquid/puree stage was I made pot roast in the crock pot with potatoes and veggies and my family ate it too and I just blended mine up in the Ninja. (gross sounding I know and gross looking but tasted amazing!) so as long as you have a food processor you'll be okay! You can blend up tuna, crab, chicken salad really anything that you could make into a stew can be blended down to meet your needs! You will have to find a protein powder or shake that you like though because otherwise you may not get enough protein and that won't be good. I would say try out some different brands of ready to drink shakes and powders now I can recommend Premier they have a chocolate one (that is the only one i can tolerate and it's yummy) and then Unjury for the powders and they have a chicken noodle soup powder! Just be careful with the powders don't add them to heat! I learned that the hard way :') it like changes the consistency and its gross.

Good luck on your journey!

Once you are on solid foods, you really shouldn't need the protein powders, but depending on your diet progression that could be up to 2 months.  Different plans vary widely - follow your doc's/center's recommendations.  Prior to solids, what about unflavored added to broth (whatever kind you like), soups or really any soft foods.  I'm not sure if you're against all dairy or just milk, but the  unflavored protein works great in yogurt (preferably Greek for more protein) or cottage cheese.

I'm pre-op right now.  Being lactose intolerant, I don't use milk for my protein shakes.  I use Unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk, blend it with vanilla protein powder and add half a banana and I'm good to go.

There are places you can by small 'sample' size packets to give them try.  Although, I have heard many times on the site that people's taste changes after the surgery.

Research your options and keep in mind why you want to have the surgery.

I got really tired of the sweet shakes, so all I did was mix the protein powder in beef or chicken broth.  You can do it with any flavored broth, as long as it is under 140 degrees Fahrenheit.  Any hotter it will cook the protein.

Doing it this way got me through the liquid diet, and I still occasionally do it if I'm low on protein for the day.  Good luck!

I don't know what your center's plan recommends, but there's no need to drink milk post op. In fact many people become lactose intolerant post op.

There are quite a few non dairy protein powders you can try. Also, there are brands that have a more water/juice texture too.

All that to say, don't let your apprehension regarding milk be the thing that discourages you from surgery. There are always other options.

Unjury makes chicken soup protein powder that's great and unflavored that I put in beef broth right after surgery.

The timeframe for protein shakes isn't really all that long.

Unflavored or chicken soup flavored Unjury works really well.

What you'll be living with ......are the perimeter sections of your grocery store.

Live, love and make the most out of what your surgeon has done for you...........live your life without excuses and without regrets.

Unjury chicken soup flavored protein powder is my favorite! Or unflavored protein powder in any broth will work.
