“While this might seem like an easy, good tasting way to get calcium, it is made from calcium carbonate, which is useless to gastric bypass post-ops. We need to be using calcium CITRATE if we don't want to have osteoporosis down the road. “I used Bariatric Advantage Chocolate Chewables Calcium Citrate for the first 4 weeks post-op. Then, I started gagging on then, and I stopped taking my calcium and BA chewable vitamins because I just could not tolerate the taste and grit. I talked with my doc, who has performed more than 1200 R en Y procedures at a major research hospital, and he indicated that he has not seen any clinical different in calcium levels in his patients between those taking calc citrate and carbonate. So, I was relieved to find something that is actually pleasurable to take. If I get to a point where I can swallow pills, I may move back to citrate, but never again will I touch another chalky chewable! By the way, I got the chocolate mint, which tastes great, and also the Walgreen's equivalent of chocolate (look like almost identical packaging. Probably same manufactuer). Chocolate are only so-so. Next time I will try caramel. These do not cause me to dump, and the calories and carbs are well within my limit. “While Viactiv tastes WONDERFUL, it's calcium comes from Calcium Carbonate which we do NOT absorb if we had RNY WLS. For carbonate to be absorbed, it requires a highly acidic environment - something our pouch doesn't have. Furthermore, carbonate is known to lead to kidney stones. Better to stick with calcium citrate. If you are looking for a GOOD chewable calcium citrate, there is a link for Bariatric Advantage's vitamins in my profile.
