Suggestion for the best Protein and Mineral Supplements after RNY

I am prepping for post surgery after Feb 10, and wanted to know the best suggestions for Protein and Mineral supplements. I am in favour of the ones with higher protein because I really am not down with shakes that have 10g of prot and having to get down 4-6 shakes a day since I am recommended to have an intake between 40-60 with less than 20g of carbs and less than 5g of fat.

I work security for a health centre and the ladies here are trying to get me to buy Visalus Sciences Vi-Shape Shake Mix. I’m kind of leery of a protein mix who’s slogan is “The Shake Mix that tastes like Cake Mix” LOL

I have also looked into Click Expresso Protein Shakes.

I havent looked into the Mineral Supplements at all.

What is your suggestion?

Warmest regards,

Darren

Premier protein shakes are good.
They come in chocolate from costco. 30g protein, 3g fat, 2g net carbs (5g - 3g of fibre) and 1g sugar

When you say "minerals" are you talking about your vitamins?

you should have noted that we don't have a costco here as most use the premier and you can only get that at costco

I noted that you can only get them at Costco ;)

You can also order them online- if this is an option

I am having whey Kool drinks (powdered) instead just couldn't stomach another shake they were making me ill and I wasn't getting them in.... have moved to the "drink" style and since have had no problems getting them in.

I hear ya.
I took a break from shakes altogether for quite a while but just started drinking them again.

There are many different shakes to have. If you have a "GNC" they have a great variety of powered mixes.
This is the kind (not the size- toooo expensive!) that I have in my cupboard. They sometimes have good sales on, I got the 2lb jugs for $30 each. I got raspberry, chocolate and vanilla. I mostly use it in my baking now.

they mix more like a drink of chrystal light rather than the milky shake variety.  Shoppers caries a few and GNC used to cary Whey Kool I have that one lemonade flavor and I mix a Lemonade crystal light and 2 scoups (42g protien) in with it and add extra water and take it tow work each day and it is pretty good.  I was gonna try the place on memorial close to Taco time too to see what they have as far as the drinks go  they have a pretty decent sized store there I can't remember the name of it though.

42g of protein for one drink? Nice! One or one and a half of those and I will be set for the day for protein! I really don't want to have to choke back 4 shakes a day

Thank You

Hi Darren,

Are the Visalus Sciences Vi-Shape Shake Mix made with whey isolate protein?  That is what you need.   As for the Click shakes, I noticed that Eggface has a lot of recipes with that particular brand of shakes.  Are they available in Canada or would you have to order online?

Good luck,

Judy

I've purchased Click at Shoppers Drug Mart in the past. Not a real high protein drink and it does have caffeine too. It does taste pretty good for a coffee style drink.

Visalus shakes are junk. A lot of people in my group gave been swayed into them..... But they do not meet guidelines as there is not enough protein per carbs. They are more soy than whey too. People always get swayed by the taste but of course it tastes good ---- there's hardly any protein on them!! There's a lot more options that are better --- taste, taste and taste some more. Just dont buy too many before surgery as what tastes good before surgery may not taste good after surgery. It's a weird phenomenon but some people do find that their tastes change.

You are right to look for a better shake!

I love Whey Gourmet, it has great stats plus great taste. The Nature's Best Whey Isolate you can get online or in the US also has a multi vit/mineral in it.

For vitamin/mineral formulas if you can get your hands on Bariatric Advantage Chewables those are great.
If not, try to find some other form of chewable or liquid based ones as they are most easily absorbed.
You will need a multi, calcium citrate with vitamin D and some form of B12 (shot or sub-lingual).

Syntrax Nectar gets my vote. after surgery, I couldn't do any protein powder mixed with milk. Too thick and made my pouch grumpy. I did Fuzzy Peach and Ice Tea then. These days I use Cappuchino in my morning coffee and vanilla Torte for other stuff, occasionally Lemon Iced Tea after exercise.

For minerals immediately post op, I would order calcium citrate powder from Well.ca. I did a chewable sugar free Quest multi, but it's a women's mix, not sure if they have a general one. I use the Costco chewable C which is sugar free. Best chewable calcium chew is the Bariatric Advantage Citrate.
