Weight Loss Surgery Directory

    heart broken

I just came back from meeting with the surgeon, expecting my date. I had gained 1 pound since my last visit in May (total of three since my referal in August of last year). H e asked why I gained the pound, I was honest and told him it for the last two weeks I had been eating bad .... as my way of mentally preparing to say goodbye to those foods forever. He told me that was not acceptable and sent me home, told me to come back in six months if I am still interested. I told him that I felt that it was like a dying persons list of things to do before they die to help prepare. He said that is fine but if one of those things is to go out and shoot people in the head, do I think it is okay??
Now i cant stop crying ... it has taken so much mentally to get here, I dont think I can go another 6 months before I have to start over again.
Wow that's rough, you only gained a little and personally I think we all indulge a little bit before surgery.  It's not like you were on optifast.  So sorry, hope you get another call very soon!  Sending you big hugs and positive vibes.  He could of just giving you a warning, like from now on.....  Be positive don't give up!  By the way wish center are you with?

Oh my goodness, that's horrible. I could understand if you had gained 10-15 but 1 pound. You could be retaining water. What hospital was this out of and what Dr. was it. That's pretty tough! Hang in there, keep us posted and call back and speak to ur SW or psych  maybe they can help you.

Guelph seems to be absolutely horrible when it comes to weight gain. Someone else was turned away for I think 8 lbs. over a year.
I do not understand the thought behind it.
I am so sorry you have to go through this.

Pretty sure I would request a transfer to a different center if I were you... 1 lbs is not unreasonable.. Yes if you gained 40 lbs because your on an eating free for all....then you might not be mentally prepared for the changes ahead. but ONE LBS???

Call and ask to be trans to HRRH or TWH or somewhere else..
I agree with Jewels request a tranfer .....this is suppose to be a provincial wide program and the rules seem to be different at each hospital which makes no sense at all the rules for one should be rules for all.   Isn't it like the school system, the same provincial wide the kids are taught all the same  well I don't understand why some centres allow shakes while others don't ...some give blood thinners some don't I've noticed alot of differances and when I questioned it at my nut class  I didn't get a satisfatory answer. Just that some hospitals do things differently which shouldn't be. They should be the same  across the board.  The rules shouldn't be so different from one place to the next isn't this why they turned this into a provincial program so they could keep track and monitor ...there really is no point if everybody is doing there own thing now is there.

please don't give up. You can do this. Please call teh SW or someone and ask them to reconsider.

I agree with all the comments, I go up and down a pound or 2 all day long, depending if I've had a glass of water, used the washroom, just eaten, etc.  DUH, you wouldn't be going for bariatric surgery if you didn't have concerns with food.  St. Joseph's in Hamilton hasn't even weighed me in the last year and I'm going on July 11th.  I'd follow up for sure, either with a follow up appt. with him or the SW or psychologist, dietician, etc.  Maybe he was having a bad day and being a jerk.  It's unreasonable.  Irregardless, please hang in there.

    1 pound, geez!
Was it the same scales?  Different scales, different weights.  Even the same scale can be off.  My gawd, I have weighed myself 15 minutes apart on the same scale and had a change in weight.

!0 pounds I can see.  Three pounds - you are doing a great job of holding your weight.
I agree with all of the comments.  My prayers go out to you.  I am so sorry.

I'm so sorry this has happened to you.. It really doesn't make any sense, and I agree with the other comments about being transferred. It's totally unfair to make you wait another 6 months.. :(

You've learned two valuable things here; 1) the healthcare system will penalize you for being honest, and 2) this doctor is an idiotic asshole.

Prepare a complaint in writing and send it to the patient advocate/patient relations person at the Guelph hospital, as well as to the head of the bariatric surgery program at Guelph and to the Bariatric Registry. All of these parties need to know what is going on. Guelph is out of control on this issue, it has to stop. A single pound is within the margin of error of any scale! This is fat discrimination and you should call it such. If Guelph will not give you a surgery date, I would file a complaint with the College of Physicians and Surgeons against the doctor and demand a transfer from the Bariatric Registry to a different, more competent hospital.
I had OHIP approved Duodenal Switch surgery with Dr. Dennis Hong at St. Joseph's Hamilton on March 7th, 2012. Want more information on the DS in Ontario? Send me a private message!
Great advice!  I am furious on her behalf!

Great post and great advice!  I'm so angry reading about this that my teeth are clenched.  Why the hell do they think we need this tool?  If we could lose weight, or even stay the same weight, on our own, we wouldn't need the surgery.

What a complete and total tool.

That is awful, I can't believe this happened to you. How can they penalize you for one pound?

I would be devasted if that happened to me.  I would call them back and if they will not reconsider get a transfer to Hamilton.

My weight varies during the day up and down 2- 3 pound so can't believe they would cancel you because of three pounds.
