Is this forever now?

I know, I'm still talking about it.  I've heard all the remedies and suggestions I can handle re: chronic costipation - actually regular impaction.  I'm still having problems with it, and will be going to my doctor asap as I can't keep doing this - it just isn't right.

Question - for those of you further out - especially those with VSG - is this the way it's going to be from now on?  Will I need to be on drugs to regulate this problem forever?  Anyone have it this bad and things are normal now??

Sorry you are having issue. My daughter PJB also had issue's actually about 2 1/2 months out she had to go to emergency to get help from them for the impaction. She is now over a year and still has some small issue's but she takes the Senokot-S and it helps her.  What you may need to do is once you get cleared then you may need to take a stool softener or Senkot- S regularly to assist you.

I had RNY 5.5 years ago. I have battled constipation pretty much since surgery. Some times are worse then others.

I find taking the Restorolax consistently is what works best for me. This was recommended by the GI Specialist I saw.

Before that I tried Probiotics, prunes, ground flax seed, stool softeners, Benefibre, Metamucil and the list goes on and on.

Is Restorolax safe to use on a daily basis?  I remember reading that I could use Dulcolax but what I didn't know is that it CANNOT be used daily.  As a result, my bowels have become very very lazy, can't even hold a fart in.

I have tried pretty much the same list as you...the prunes lately and nothing then Flax also and nothing, so now thinking of Restotolax but just want to make sure if we can take it everyday?  Was also thinking of Fiber capsules?  I need to control this so bad and I know I should have went to my doc by now but didn't for some reason or another, thinking that "oh, I'll give this a try first and then go" and now, 18 months later, still fighting this hard!

Thanks,

Nathalie

Dulcolax is a stimulant laxative. In Michigan we were told not to use it post op.
Restorolax draws water into the bowel. No stimulant. Safe to use everyday and long term.
My GI doc said use twice per day for a week. Then add a dose if you need or cut back if you are going too often. Most of the time one dose per day works for me.

I was impacted once at about 3 weeks post-op. I was already taking Softlax twice daily, so I added 1 tsp of soluble fiber 3x daily and upped my water. I have not had an issue since then.

I think I might be impacted, I haven't had a real poop Since before surgery...7 days ago, and sounds very tmi but my poop gets down there (to rectum) but won't come out. I've tried milk of magnesia and benefiber but still nothing. Going to dr tomorrow about incision and I will ask about this too......but just so I know , what do they do to fix this?? An enema?

Try a glycerin suppository or put on a rubber glove and insert your finger and start to dig it out. Once you get it started things should move. Sorry to be so graphic but that is what has to happen. As a previous poster once said it is like passing a Buick.

But it has got to be done.

That's impaction - I've had it almost every time I've gone to the bathroom.  I know that I should have gone to the hospital the first time - but was able to "disimpact" myself, using, yes, my own hands, after about 3 hours or so.  NOT FUN AND VERY GROSS!!   I used several glycerin suppositories, MOM.  I have found the benefibre has done nothing.  Adding fibre on top of a "lazy" or slowed bowel only adds MORE bulk to try to get out.  I would suggest to keep using something - I kept thinking it was going to get better, so I didn't remain consistent with taking MOM, stool softeners, but I will be now.  I've had it with the "sessions" I go through in order to get things out. (see my post below)

I was 9 days before my first horrible impaction - don't wait any longer - either go to the hospital, or use a fleet enema to get that thing out.  It's not healthy!
