Impressed with TWH pre-admission appointment
Just got home from my pre-admission appointment @ TWH. Very thorough. First a review of health and meds, then the nurse takes your blood pressure and swabs you for bad bacteria (nose/armpit/genital area). Next you have your ECG done, then your blood taken, and finally you meet with anesthesiologist. As has been my experience throughout this journey, everyone at TWH was pleasant, polite and professional.
As I gulp down the Opti, I'm counting down the days till surgery!
I couldn't quite believe it when I was presented with this huge Q-tip that could have been an arrow it was so long and told to insert it about 2 inches... you really need practice or some instruction to pull that off easily and without discomfort... neither of which I had or was given. ;D I'm glad to hear that rectal swabs are no longer required.
Jenn. :)
Okay...I've got to ask. Why the genital/rectal swabs? What's the purpose of that? It's quite possible I'm missing the obvious here (likely, if I'm truthful), but I just can't imagine what.

Swabs are looking for MRSA (methicillin resistant staph aureaus) on the skin which requires some extra prep so that your insides don't get infected. If you have it you can't get rid of it but you don't want it in you.
TWH is a well oiled machine my pre-admission went smoothly and fast, I went from one person to the next without waiting. You'll find your OR prep goes just as smoothly.
