Well, that could depend on whether they're footing the bill for your time off or if your company is.

they don't provide your time off, your employer does. At least, in our case, where i work.

I have GWL and as others have said I didn't tell them anything.

I did call to confirm that I had semi private room coverage, and had to give the hospital my insurance information so I wouldn't be charged. I also made sure I had prescription coverage for the meds that I was given after surgery.

Hope this helps.

I had Manulife, not GWL, for my short-term disability but I imagine it's a similar process. They gave me a form to have my surgeon sign and that was it. My surgeon did indicate the type of surgery and expected recovery. I had no problem getting my time off (5 weeks + 1 week gradual return). It kind of is their business, they need to know the nature of your disability for their claim. Your employer however does not need to know.

I have GWL but short term coverage is under the employer. GWL for us only covers long term. I just need a letter for my employer. You HR department should be able to advise you

I am the same.....my employer does not have short term coverage so I just assumed I would get my ROE for sick leave and then apply for Employment Insurance benefits???  This post has got me thinking for sure.

I have GWL and they covered my short term disability.  I took 5 weeks with no issues.  As with Manulife, there is a form that needs to be completed by the surgeon.  After that it was no questions asked.  My experience was good.

I too have GWL and they did need a form filled out by me, one by my boss and one by my surgeon.  Even tho' our company does pay for Short Term Disability.  Maybe they're protecting the company as well?
