Need help! Bran Muffins???

Before we go any further this might be a TMI.

I also know that I shouldn't be resorting to this but....

Since my surgery last year (1 yr post op), I have had a terrible time with constipation. I have to take Restoralax on a daily basis and stool softeners.  My fibre intake is good and I drink at least 8-9 cups of water a day.  All the tools are there but I still have problems to the extent that I sometimes have to disimpact myself (sorry).

I have talked to the centre and they have suggested that I cut back on the Restoralax etc gradually but when I do I get in a bad way.

Yesterday I baked low fat bran muffins for the kids and was in such a state (please don't judge) that I ate a small one. ! Well lo and behold it worked!!

I was wondering if anyone had a recipe for a RNY friendly hi protein low carb muffin that can be eaten on a daily basis.

I've checked the recipes here and there are soooo many on there but I would like a BTDT recipe that works.  TIA

Check the Recipe forum : http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/ontario_recipes/discussion/

There's a thread there called:  Breads and Muffins

Maybe you can find what you are looking for there.

Edited to add:  Not sure if you would want muffins daily, perhaps adding bran to other things like yogurt would help as well.

I have been adding flax and chia seed to my yogurt. I will check out the thread you suggested.  Thank You!

Why not just run the numbers for your existing recipe that you make low fat as you know exactly what you use and how many it makes and maybe your own recipe might be good enough.  Anything with bran is going to bring the carb numbers up no matter what else is in them.  You could try using some bran in yogurt if you dont' want to eat muffins daily but at a year out, if you have the room in your day for the calories and it works, then eat it.  It may have just been a coincidence that it worked or maybe it wasn't the bran but the sugar that did it.

Fiber one has a cereal that is 14 grams of fiber per half cup serving and its only 60 calories for that half cup, it has really low sugar and is now made without aspartame its called fiber one cereal original. It looks like little twigs. Just make sure you dont get the other kinds they have a lot of sugar and way less fiber. :-)

Hi Alysan,

I had similar issues after my petersens hernia repair (couldn't go for 3 weeks), as well as for a short time after.  The nut. at Guelph suggested the fibre one cereal as well as finn crackers (also high in fibre), but I find I like to limit these as they cause me to want more carbs.  I started making these wraps/crepes that Zizzler talks about, and since they contain psyllium husks they work wonders.  And they are pretty good.  They make a great crepe with nsa jam or even cold as a wrap.

I don't know how to do a hard link, but here is the site in case you are interested.  I use almond milk and sometimes add cinnamon etc to the batter.

What are psyllium husks and where would I buy these?  Bulk Barn?

Yes, the bulk barn has it, and it's already ground.
