Out of town patients having surgery in Toronto?

Hello everyone,

I was told that I should stay close to Toronto Western Hospital for a couple of days after being discharged. I know myself I would be more comfortable at home (2hrs away) sleeping in my own bed then being by myself in a Toronto Hotel.  Has anyone opted to go home and not do this?

Being that your 2 hours away I think you should stay Atleast a couple nights in the area. If something were to happen and you had to rush back 2 hours might be too long...especially if there's traffic. I wouldn't chance it.

I live 90 mins away. They never suggested I stay close. I have been home 4 days now and all is well. I think it's really up to you. Maybe even go by how you are feeling good post surgery.

I'm also two hours away. I will be staying in a hotel near the hospital for a couple of days after surgery. Although I live somewhere with good hospitals, it seems better to me to be somewhere that specializes in bariatric surgery for a little while afterwards.

HRRH's policy is if your more than one hour away you must stay at near the hospital for several days post op or they won't operate on you.

It's for your safety, you must be near your bariactric centre in case you need them. Your local hospital won't touch you in an emergency, they won't know what to do.

I'm about 2 hours north, and as much as I would LOVE to be home in my own bed and pillow, and my cat - I am making plans to stay in TO for 2 nights.  I'd rather that than endure a family member driving like a crazy panicked loon with me riding shotgun experiencing pain & road rage for the trip back down to TO in traffic should a complication arise.

I had my surgery at HRRH and I was told that I needed to stay close by since I am 2 hours away. It is very comforting to know that if something bad did happen I would be close to the experts that could help. Don't forget to ask your bariatric clinic if there are hotels in the area that offer special bariatric rates. We saved $40/night by asking for the bariatric rate. Good luck. Chris

I live several hours north of TO so I had no choice but stay a few days. The Super 8 on Spadina is a short walk/drive from TWH and they offer a hospital rate ($79 the last time I was there in March).

Referral: May 2014 / Surgery: February 2015 Dr. Jackson TWH
