Just curious about this , just about 3.5 months post op and throughout all my medical visits and surgeons etc the topic of goal weight has never come up. I see so many people with a goal weight in there posts

How did you get your number ?

For me GOAL was just that number that I remember looking good at (a looonnnng time ago).  150lbs seems to be a popular/go-to for most average height/sized women.  Of course once I hit that goal, I wanted 140...now I'm 141 and want to be in the 130's to create the largest buffer for any possible bounceback.

Moral of my story is......I just hit 1yr and as I may continue to get much further under my original GOAL in the months to come.......

MY TRUE GOAL IS....  To be able to happily maintain 150 or less in the years to come.

I think that's an awesom goal weight.

I don't ever remember not thinking I was fat.  I did get downt to 170-175 for the last couple of years of high school and still thought I was obese.  I'm only 5 ft 3, so my initial goal is 150 but I'd really like to see 130 with 140 being the goal to sustain for the future.

RNY Jan 12, 2017 Lost 137 lbs but regained 60.

77 lbs lost and counting!

Losing the regain! I got this!

I just figured out what weight I need to be in order to have a normal BMI and then went 20lbs lower. Maybe not realistic for my body type but I will decide when I get closer.

Hey GentleDomenic!

From what I have been told by my clinic and have heard from others, is to at least reach your 80% EW(Excess Weight). The "average" WLS (RNY) is expected to lose 70-80% of their EW. Anything above that is considered a bonus. If you are not sure how to get your EW it goes like this.

Find out what the highest allowable weight is for your BMI to be in the "Normal" range.

For me, it is 194 lbs.

Take your current/starting weight and subtract the BMI weight from it.

For me, my highest weight was 419 lbs

So, 419 - 194 = 225 lbs

My EW is 225 lbs.

Take 80% of that 225 lbs and you get 180 lbs.

Take my original weight 419 subtract my 80%(180) = 239 lbs.

So for me to reach 80% loss of my EW, I would need to be 239 lbs.

Well, I have surpassed that, and I am 217 lbs, which comes to about 90% loss of my EW.

I was told by doctors years ago that I would not/should not worry about getting to my normal BMI of 194 lbs. I would look sick and my body may not like me because of my large frame.

My personal goal was 219 lbs. - a nice even number of 200 lbs lost.

I am healthy and happy, and my medical team couldn't be happier.

Hope that helps,

Cheers,

Skotti

My goal is 100% of my excess weight.  Just like when I was in university my goal was an A.  That doesn't mean life is horrible if I got a B.  If I know I tried my hardest and ended up short of my goal that was ok.  But I never want to strive for average.

The nutritionist set me a goal range (not a hard number) based on my excess weight and losing 75% of it.  She said it isn't hard and fast, just something to aim for and that it depends on how I am feeling etc.  She said it is a good thing to review and revise at 6 months and a year.
