Hi all,

Im still waiting for my orientation, i just had a question about caffeine...why is it not allowed? Are you allowed to have it post surgery?

It is not allowed because it increases the risk of ulcers. It is not recommended after surgery from what I understand but with time some people will start trying to introduce it. You may find that once you have cut out caffeine and after losing the weight you do not need it. If it is a habit thing you can have decaf.

Thank you I was wondering about that. I got myself down to one a day in the morning and if I have any the rest of the day its decaf. I'm sure i can go decaf...but that coffee is so good in the morning. I'm one of those people that doesnt function without it lol

Try transitioning to tea if possible. It at least cuts back on some of the caffeine and is one step closer to being caffeine free.

You may also want to try doing half decaf. If you brew at home, mix half regular and half decaf. If you go to, say Tims, they do half decaf. I've ordered many!

Thats a good idea...i was ordering decaf all the time and would only do my coffee at home caffienated. But stopped after a while ...was getting frustrated the decaf at tims isnt always fresh and i would ask from the freshest pot ...nicely not.snobby. And i would get old tasting coffee ...not often enough but enough times to make me switch. And I know they cant help it ...it depends on how fast its selling how old the pot is?.unless i sit there and make them brew a new pot which i wont do. Never thought of asking half and half. Im not a coffee snob just dont like it when its taste burned or old. Thank you for the suggestion will do that.

There are a number of reasons that you are not allowed caffeine after WLS.

Immediately after gastric bypass sugery it can irritate a healing pouch. It is an irritant. It is also a diuretic...causing you to loose precious fluids at a time when you are already having enough trouble getting enough fluid. We already struggle with dehydration...esp immediately post-op. It can also cause you to feel hungry...because of its diuretic and stimulant effects.

There is a chance that this irritation may cause an ulcer.

I have adjusted to life without caffienated everything. I know drink a lot of decaffienated herbals teas. I have to say that I am not a fan of decaffienated coffee. So I don't drink it!

I suggest trying to eliminate it now.

It will make it easier post WLS.

Good luck and take care

Thank you for clarifying:):) I have myself down to one caffeine coffee on morning and the rest of the day decaf ...still working on getting rid of the one caffeinated coffee. Im thinking switching to tea would help the transitiom easier. Im not a morning person without some type of caffeine ...the rest of the day im fine lol

Guelph says that it is an irritant to your pouch. Also, there is some evidence that it may inhibit the absorption of certain minerals and vitamins (iron being one of them). I drink decaf 99% of the time. When I occasionally have a fully leaded coffee, I love it, but find that I start to get that dull pain and reflux also kicks in. I always have some decaf packets in my purse.
