Has anyone heard of drinking a glass of soda or Gatorade 3 hours before surgery?

This was part of my surgical instructions from Humber but at the pre-op appointment they recommended that I did not consume it either the night before or the morning of surgery.

Instead they told me to have my last Opti prior to midnight and sips of water in the morning only.

Thank you. I was reading the forms from the surgeons office & saw this. Nobody has ever told me in person. I wonder the reason for it.

It says "liquids high in sugar will help you feel stronger and recover faster"

the suggested high carbohydrate (sugar) liquids were:

gatorade, cranberry juice, apple juice, ginger ale, 7-up/sprite or iced tea.

that said: There is a New policy in hospitals to limit juice to diabetics and it is no longer included as part of their meals.

I was not diabetic but had a moderately elevated blood glucose reading for my three month trend that suggested pre-diabetes in my pre-op blood work.

My anesthesiologist told me that I should have a can of full sugar ginger ale or juice about 4 hours before my surgery. Since I knew it was the last pop I would ever drink, I savoured that can of Vernor's. She said that the sugar in my system and the ginger would help with nausea and ensure that my blood sugars were good at the time of surgery (I was a type 2 diabetic). I had my surgery in Guelph.
