Sleep Study post RNY

Hello everyone!

As many of you already know, I am 7 months out post RNY. Down 108 lbs...

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea back in 2011 after having TOH. I spent 8 hours in recovery because they were having a difficult time getting my oxygen saturation up.

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. I was also told that structurally the back of my tongue was thick and the anatomy with the trachea/esophagus were too close too each other.

I have been successfully treated with BIPAP.

Using the Wisp nose covering only my nose and have been quite successful using it.

Fast forward.... Since losing the weight and especially in the last (3) months, I am struggling with the BIPAP. Opening my mouth and waking up a ton of times during the night with super dry mouth.

I have been followed closely by my Respiratory Therapist and we have adjusted pressures, increasing and decreasing them. Increasing and decreasing humidity. Chin strap! God help me! Nothing has helped.

I am booked for a (2) level sleep study tonight. I am sincerely hoping that my BIPAP will be a thing of the past. Hoping that I can sleep...

I am thinking the my tongue has not lost weight and the structural positioning of anatomy hasn't changed????

I remain hopeful and pray that they can figure out what is going on.

Has anyone experienced this?

Your thoughts and recommendations are welcome and appreciated.

Thank you!

Sandra.

Gosh, that sounds so uncomfortable. I hope it will get resolved at the sleep study. Good luck!

Hi Mahalo,

That sounds dreadful! I hope things work out for you. I know how it feels to use the cpap and then open your mouth when sleeping...waking up with a dry mouth is not fun. All the best to you.

You may need a full face mask. I couldn't use the nasal one even with a chin strap as my mouth always opened. I ended up having to go back on cpap years after not needing it due to allergies and I still wake up every morning with my mouth open and dry with a full face mask. Mine is due to nose likely being swollen from allergies. Any chance you have allergies since it is full on allergy season right now?

Curious to hear how it went Sandra. I had dry mouth and was able to reduce the pressure on my Cpap myself which helped me. I need to reduce it again as I am starting to find the pressure a bit strong again.

Hope it went well for you, I just wish/hope they had the same air beds that they use for us after WLS. I'd sleep better for sure and I dread the day I'd have to do another sleep study. who the hell can sleep on the boards the Sleep Study Clinic had/has.
