Denied Question?

Hello Everyone!

I have a question about being denied. The nurse said to me that she thought I could loose weight on my own. I would have if I could have.... She recommended that I see a dietician. I've been on every diet imaginable including Weigh****chers. I continue to yoyo up and down. I have a BMI of 41, have severe sleep apnea, gerd, pre-diabetes and a fatty liver if that matters. Does it mean I won't be accepted if I haven't seen a dietician? I have my next appointment (dietician / social worker). Does this mean I haven't been denied yet? Would they continue to make these appointments for me if I was going to be denied???

CONFUSED ! (and a bit frustrated)

They can deny you at any stage in the process. I went through all the appointments and was apprehensive that I would be denied because my BMI was only 39.8 and my only real comorbidity besides fatty liver was high BP.

I think the fact that you have a history of dieting and did WW that you'll be fine. It really isn't up to the Nurse to approve you anyway. You qualify based on your BMI and your comorbidities. Continue with the appointments and follow the rules. I'm guessing you'll be fine.

I agree with Ginnny. I don't think they can deny you if you meet the criteria. I too had a lower bmi and only qualified because of the co-morbidities. It was extremely stressful and the Internist that I saw did not make things better for me. He tried to talk me out of it. But, in the end everything worked out. I stood my ground and like you, insisted that it was the only option for me. I am just over 1 month post-op now and I am so grateful. I wish you all the best.

I agree with what the two ladies said above. The nurse doesn't make the decision whether you are approved or not.

Yes, you can be denied, but the dietitian, social worker, and bariactric doctor and/or surgeon are the only ones that can, not the nurse.

I see your from Lucan, got family there, live in London. Are you going through Windsor or Guelph? I'm going through Windsor.

If you've been scheduled for your next appointments you haven't been denied, but like I said the nurse has no say in the decision. You can be denied by the social worker, or dietitian, but all that means generally is that you have to work on things more, and come back for another appointment.

Don't lose hope, you more than meet the criteria. Even if your BMI feel below 40, with your medical issues you'd still qualify. Sounds like you might have got a nurse that was a bit too opininated lol

This journey especially to get all the approvals can be frustrating and stressful at times, but don't give up, you get to where you are going as long as you put the work in.

Good luck with your journey!

Hello thanks for your comments!!! Going through Guelph. Glad about that as its closer for me. The nurse was really nice. I just think she was trying to convince me to do it in my own. I just don't want to go to all these appointments then have therm ay I'm denied. That would honestly be a huge let down.

I had to see a dietitian no matter what and I was approved. My BMI is very high sadly and they even asked me if I wanted to talk about the diet plan. I think some of this is just a process they must complete but I am not a expert.

Be honest with you history. Explain you efforts and hang in there.

Go to the dietitian and see how it goes. I think sometimes a little push-back is normal. Forward motion at all times and if you sincerely believe this is what will help you just keep going to your appointments.

Hi Kimmy,

I understand the stress of going through this and worrying about being denied. I worried right up until surgery morning that things could go wrong.

People are going to have strong opinions about what you "should" be able to do. With a bmi of 56, and a lifetime of trying and failing, I had a nurse try to talk me out of it and try to convince me to do it "naturally". I just told her I've tried and regained my whole life and decided this was my best option.

There were parts of the process where I was asked why I thought surgery was best for me, and I had to give cogent answers. Be prepared to answer non-defensively, and to speak your truth.

You will find most health practitioners support you. You may find the odd one who has judgments, but they are not judging you; it's a reflection of some inner belief they hold for themselves. Try not to react, internalize or take it personally cause it's not.

Good luck and stay positive and you'll get through this :)
