New family Dr - super supportive

I finally found a family Dr (we moved to Sudbury July 1st and nobody was taking on new patients). He has been amazingly supportive with my quest to have this surgery. When I had my first registration appointment 3 weeks ago and told him about being in the process he sent me for new and up to date blood work "in anticipation of my upcoming appointments" as well as a heart trace as my heart rate is always really fast (averages 102bpm - normal for me but not normal).

I saw him today for the results of the heart trace and he informed me that he's been doing research on bariatric surgery so he can better support me post operatively. The heart trace report showed one instance of tachycardia for 7mins which was when I was scraping and de-icing the car with the big snow fall last week. He accepted this reason and isn't concerned in anyway but because the paperwork for the 24hr trace said longer monitoring is recommended, he's asked me to do a 48hr trace "because the bariatric clinic will want everything squared away and we should make sure everything is done so you don't have any hold ups but I'm not at all worried".

He said he's already put notes in my file about making sure when he does a blood work req he checks my zinc and vitamin d as well as some other things (I can't remember specifically). He said i just need to tell him what I need from him and he'll do his very best to make sure I get both support and resources to make me as successful as possible . I love the fact that because he didn't feel he was knowledgeable enough about this area of medicine that he has taken it upon himself to research it. I feel delighted today and if anyone needs a family Dr in Sudbury I have one to recommend!

Amazing! I'm so happy for you... having support is so important, and that includes your doctor. Mine plays such a vital role in my treatment. It sounds like yours will too :) Congratulations!!

I'm so happy to read this!!! Congrats. This is so important.

I saw my Dr. yesterday for something unrelated (strep throat) and she looked at me and said 'you aren't going to lose anymore, are you?' I told her I'm happy where I am but would really love to reach a healthy BMI. She shrugged her shoulders and said 'whatever, you seem fine'.

This is the same Dr. who would only begrudgingly send in my referral. She said that if everyone who was overweight got the surgery we would have an 'epidemic' on our hands. At the time I had a BMI of almost 43.

As for future bloodwork, my centre gave me requisitions for all of them for the next 5 yrs (Thats how long I follow-up with them). I'm going to photocopy one before they are done so that I can make sure my family Dr orders all the same tests after that. I'm sure you will get something similar in Sudbury.

If you were referred after April 1st this year it's only 12 months of follow ups you get (instead of the 5yrs). I think this is far too little but who am I?!

i agree with you completely!! If that were me, I would only have one more appointment. I hope they can change that or make allowances for people who choose to continue with follow-up.

I love when my Doctor tells me she needs to check something out and does research. That's the kind of Doctor you want.
