Roux-en-Y, IBS-C and Lax-a-day

So June 7, 2018 had my RNY. My IBS-C did not seem to improve at all. My gastroenterologist, GP, and the WMC in Ottawa all recommended Lax-a-day every day. Of course, my body depends on this to run regularly but the gas is horrific. I have little to no control over the flatulence. The smell is so bad my family regularly blames my dogs, including the puppy, for pooping in the house .

Does anyone else have this issue? Will the excess gas go away sometime soon? I have been doing Lax-a-day daily for a few weeks. Maybe I will be able to wait it out if I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel .

TIA

Jackie

And i thought it was the coffee shop. lol

Don't know about the laxatives and things but that Smell...ooo ooo that smell is for life so you either take the blame off the dog or learn to be a ventriloquist and Ass Questions with your new gift. As for extra gas... For me it depends on what I eat.

  • Hope the dog recovers from the shaming. haha

Can you give us a daily sample of what you eat (be honest and tell us the good/bad/the ugly).

99% of the time when people who have had RNY and have bad smelly gas like you are describing its due to eating carbs & sugar not the lax a day.

I have suffered from constipation my whole life and having RNY made it even worse. I take a capful of Restoralax (Canadian) Miralax (American) in my 1st coffee of the day and it keeps me regular. It has been approved by both my RNY Surgeon and my family doctor for daily long term use. The thing with Restoralax is you need to give it a few days to start to work and stay on it, if you go off it you are back to square one. It works with pulling water from your system to create soft stools so being hydrated is KEY!

Food-wise I follow a meal plan designed specifically for WLS patients .For example today my food is;

Banana bread breakfast bake, protein ball, shredded chicken with marinara and provolone in a wrap, yogurt and strawberries, turkey sausage and mushroom soup, high protein dark chocolate oatmeal "cookie". I also have at minimum 2 decaf tea, water and a smoothie giving me on average 70 oz.

Now, there is the odd day that I have 5 cheesies or a small handful of chips at night but that is rare.

I will certainly need to take the lax-a-day every day. I just hate having to depend on something to keep me regular. Oh well.

You are eating too many carbs, sugar and sugar alcohols and fried foods hence the gas, plain and simple.

Your menu might be specifically designed for WLS patients but it does not mean its right

Best of luck with the IBS-C.

I'm not eating any fried foods, the cookies and breakfast bake are made with oatmeal, coconut flour, and flaxseed meal. No refined sugar. My WMC dietician approved the meal plans .It is balanced macros, 100g protein, no more than 30g of sugar. Can you share where I am going wrong? Aside from the obvious chips and cheeses .

Just as a follow up --- I make everything myself. Anything bought is low sugar like the marinara sauce. The yogurt is 0% oikos greek yogurt or slim and fit from the states. I thought I was doing the right thing. If I am wrong then I feel lost and am unsure how to proceed.

I hope you understand I am not trying to fight or argue - I was thinking that the plan was exactly what I should have been doing .
