I'll post my surgery day and hospital stay later but in the meantime please help.

Can't seem to get down my homemade chicken broth. Makes me want to puke. Any suggestions for any type of food for stage 1??? Not having fun at all.

Because it's difficult to get much in at first I would agree that you should focus on the protein shakes. Once off clear fluids ( for me that was only 2 days) you can have cream soups, apple sauce, Greek yogurt, etc but I still started with protein shakes to make sure I was getting enough protein for the day.

Hi There, if I remember correctly you went through Guelph...I did too. My clear fluids I did the diluted juices, sugar free jello, tea clear...I could not handle any broths at all...there is a tetra pack of bone chicken broth at Walmart Imagine is the brand name....but I basically stuck with the juice water and jello...Its hard with the now shakes rule, but the guidelines are there for a reason! I also took gravol a few times first week out and used the pain meds too. Get lots of water and rest!

It's kind of scarring me. My proteins are 2. Carbs 12. Calories 84. I did go through Guelph and have very strict diet instructions. Jello, broth and diluted 100% sugar free fruit juice, 1 litre of water. The surgeon gave 2 iron infusions before I left hospital due to my hemoglobin dripping after surgery. I feel exactly how I felt when I was discharged which is weak and exhausted with nausea. Am i doing something wrong that I can't see?

Hi again...Do yourself a favor and don't count anything right now...calories and carbs don't matter at this stage. Your job right now is to get clear liquids in...follow your food bible! Guelph is very different from other centers! Just work on getting the fluids in you! Next stage will be the full fluids....It's not easy! I know it is hard! I am just ahead of you...but following the bible everything is counted for us! the only thing I track is my water...Best wishes to you...Your Energy is going to be very low for next little while mine is still and I am just coming up to 3 weeks myself ...I kept thinking I was doing something wrong because I felt really out of it...the low energy nausea, and some pain are really normal right now..I still have all these symptoms!...I took my pain meds until they were gone! and I am glad I did. Thoughts are with you!

Priority #1 is water/ sugar-free liquid to keep yourself hydrated. 64oz at a minimum but 80-100oz is better. Don't worry about getting in calories right now. You have all kinds of fat stores to use until you can get some calories but dehydration can land you back in the hospital. Jello, SF popsicles, and water enhancers all give you hydration, so don't think you need plain water.

Protein shakes will give you the biggest bang for your buck, as far as protein/calories. Try multiple powders (you can get sample packs if need be) and ready-made shakes. You can dilute with extra water or unsweetened almond milk if something seems too thick. Try them all temperatures too, because normally there is one temp you can tolerate. Ice cold, room temp, warmed up. Premier Protein is really good warmed up like hot chocolate.

Until you feel better give yourself a pass on finding other foods that work. This journey isn't about things tasting good it's about healing and getting healthy!
