Topic: RE: Long term diet restrictions with VSG
I completely agree with Paula....with the VSG going low carb is your best choice! We do not have the benefit of the calorie malabsorption that RNYers do and so eating smaller amounts of what you did before is probably not going to yield the same results. The first year is when you maximize your weight loss and some Sleevers notice they can eat a lot more as early as 6 months post op so use the first year to be as vigilant as possible and to change your eating habits for the long run.

Most Centres will give u the same advice they give RNY patients but having done a lot of research and reading posts from very successful VSGers on the VSG board....the best plan I have found is to keep daily calories between 600-800 (protein first), keep protein at least 80 g, carbs below 40g (closer to 20 is best) and drink 80 oz if water. Do not graze as you will be able to get in way too many calories and do not drink your calories b/c this will not keep you feeling full.

It seems like a lot of work but MFP makes tracking a lot easier. I am just past 8 months and I eat very little fruit and no starchy carbs...I mainly get my carbs from veggies and some dairy.

Once at goal you can add back some carbs slowly and increase your calories to where your body finds its maintenance level.

This is just my experience from what has worked for me so take what you want and leave the rest. Good luck to you, the VSG is a wonderful tool that will give you back your life!

Topic: RE: how bad is a starbucks....

I do the Cafe Americano decaf and iced and add a little bit of milk and sometimes some sugar free syrup or sweetener...I also do the skinny decaf lattes when I want a treat but I'm concerned about drinking my calories as well.

Just a tip, you can ask them to steam protein into the cappuccino or latte which adds around 8 g of protein per scoop so it really helps if you're trying to increase your protein intake.

    Topic: RE: Protien Bar brands?

You can buy the Quest bars in Popeye's Nutrition Centres.  They have some in Ontario in the GTA and Hamilton/Stoney Creek.  Amazing and such great stats and so much fibre!

I really wanted it but when i went for my surgeon's appointment it was HIS idea that i have the VSG..due to my reliance on NSAIDS, 2 previous surgeries and he felt my high BMI might necessitate the need to revise it into a DS in the future.  Good Luck to you!

Topic: RE: Surgery dates for Hamilton??
I JUST got my call on Thursday, August 16 with a  date  this coming Tuesday, August 28!!  My surgeon's appointment was on June 4th and orientation was on Feb 13th...My referral was sent in in October, 2011 so that makes 10 months for me in total. Hope that helps.
