    lol, Karen!

I agree about the subject line.  I've stopped reading posts with a subject line that says things like "Did you know...?" or "Question" or anything that gives me no idea what it's about. It's not that it ****** me off, but I don't have time to read every post every day so I've become selective.  thanks for posting this, Sandy.

Topic: RE: What are you eating/doing today (Monday-Victoria Day)
    Good afternoon!

Finally getting around to visiting here for a few minutes.  Puttered around in the garden this morning and am on my way out for a visit with a friend and her kids, then to my son's soccer tonight.  Hoping to get around to painting my toenails tonight (which is SO easy now!); it's the only really "girlie" thing that I do.

B - small slice ww toast w/ pb, sm Liberte Greek yogurt
    S - milky tea x 2
L - >3 oz roast beef (deli), 2 crackers, 1/2 oz LF cheddar... and I caved and had 2 Golden Oreo cookies (damn DH for bringing them home!)
S - protein shake, maybe a bit of fruit later on
D - ww pita pizza w/ lean ham, peppers, olives and LF mozzerella
    S - popsicle

Enjoy the rest of this beautiful day, everyone!

I was sent home with dilaudid in pill form.  You may also be able to use tramacet (much milder than dilaudid).

    S - decaf tea w/ milk x 2

D - ww pita pizza w/ LF mozzerella, lean ham and some veggies

Topic: RE: i just helped my friend... so I'm thanking all of you.
In my addiction recovery literature, one of the key concepts is "We only keep what we have by giving it away."  I believe that sharing our experience, strength and hope is crucial to maintaining our recovery, whether it is from substance abuse or dysfunctional eating. I'm so happy for you, that you were able to help your friend, Monica.  And in doing so, I believe you helped reinforce your own recovery.

    Topic: RE: Ulcers????
It really could be any number of things, from lactose intolerance (lots of people develop this post-op) to an ulcer, to a bowel problem.  My concern is that it gravitates.  How severe is the pain?  If it goes beyond a 5/10, I would go straight to emerg, and don't forget to tell them that you're post-WLS.  Good luck, I hope it's something minor and easy to treat.

    Topic: RE: Ulcer
    Hi Harold.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this.  The scope will determine if there is an ulcer and, if so, it can be treated appropriately and quite easily.

If they don't find an ulcer, please monitor the discomfort closely. I had discomfort, then mild pain, then gradually increasing periods of pain over the course of several months.  Ended up my bowel was twisting and eventually herniated.  If you have pain, go to emerg and tell them that your post-WLS, and that you're concerned that it might be a problem with your bowels.  Insist on a CT scan and a referral for an MRI.

I hope it's something minor.  It really could be anything (including a newly developed intolerance for lactose, or any number of other things).  The scope isn't so bad, just make sure they drug you!

Topic: RE: I thought I could be brave.....
Brenda, everyone is different as far as their pain level post-op. And there are factors that influence how people experience pain, things like childhood experiences of chronic pain/illness, trauma history, all kinds of stuff.

You are less likely to develop a problem with the pain meds if you take them as prescribed rather than taking less.  If your pain is properly managed, you won't feel like taking more than necessary at times because you won't have extreme peaks and valleys with your pain.  If your script says "1 or 2 every 4-6 hours", start with 2 every 4 hours and cut it back to 1 every 6 hours, until you can switch to regular tylenol.

This is not a time to be "tough".  You don't heal as well or as quickly when you are in pain.  Let your body heal now.  There's plenty of time to get up and at it later!

It does seem like a lot of food.  The dieticians really push the Food Guide.  You might be interested in checking out some articles about it.  Here's one that was in the Canadian Medical Association Journal:

    Good morning!

I haven't been here since the weekend; adjusting to the new job and new schedule.  I'm off today (on a 4-day week for the first month or so) and have a great day planned.  Out for breakfast with one of my closest friends to celebrate his 50th bday, then running a few errands, then probably doing a bit of work in the garden and maybe even a bit of bicycling tonight.

    13 months post-RNY

B - don't know yet, probably a couple of eggs and 1/2 slice ww toast
S - milky decaf tea; later, cheese string
L - 3 oz deli turkey, mustard, pickles, maybe a bit of spinach salad
S - Greek yogurt (small Liberte)
    D - fish, salad
    S - maybe 1/2 protein bar.

    Have a great day, everyone!

    Topic: RE: Celebrix
I take Tylenol Arthritis.  When it gets bad, I take tramacet (tramadol with tylenol). It's the lowest level opiate on the market so is the least addictive of all drugs in this category, but if you have a history of addiction you need to be careful; regardless, it's good to take any pain meds as little as possible, only when needed.  If your GP won't prescribe it, speak with the nurse practitioner at your clinic.

I couldn't stomach the liquid iron.  Iron pills tend to be very small, so I switched to them with no problem around week 2.  Check with your clinic before you change anything.

At two weeks out, they shouldn't be rushing you at all!  But if you are hurrying to get out in the morning, you might try having your coffee at home and bring a protein shake with you.  Or bring Greek yogurt and eat it when you get the chance.

Premier shake mixed with 1/2 C skim milk and 2 T instant decaf; very yummy mocha!

If money is an issue, try the Loblaws PC protein powder.  It has 27 g of protein per scoop.  I mix 1/2 scoop of vanilla, 1/2 scoop of unflavoured, 1 C of skim milk and add a bit of crystal light (strawberry kiwi works well).  Do not mix and then refrigerate or it will clump; prepare and drink immediately.  I always use the blender, and include a few ice cubes.  Or just use the vanilla, milk and frozen strawberries.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll find what works for you.

Enjoy the golf, Barb.  It's a beautiful day here in Ottawa, I hope it's the same where you are and that the foot gets better soon.

There's a plant and bake sale in my neighbourhood today, so I'll be picking up some plants and avoiding the bake sale tables, then doing a bit of gardening.  Blue menu greek frozen yogurt bar?  Gotta check that out!

I haven't been here in a few days.  I'm eating regular food again, and am feeling up for starting the new job on Mon. Yea!

    1 year + post RNY

    B - 1/2 croissant w/ pb; decaf tea w/ milk (a bit later, x 2)
    S - 1/2C greek yogurt
L - 3 oz deli turkey, pickle, baby carrots w/ LF dip
S - 1/2 protein bar; decaf cafe au lait at some point
D - shepherd's pie, easy on the potato
    S - maybe a SF fudgsicle

    Have a great day, everyone.

As far as quantitity goes, you should gradually work up to 1 - 1 1/2 cups of food.  At 2 weeks out, I was eating 1/4-1/2 cup at a time.  Measuring is your friend!

Pain is a sign of both leaks and ulcers.  I haven't had a leak, but I have had an ulcer; if you have one, you will know something is wrong.  If you have any inkling that things aren't right, call your clinic immediately.  If you have any severe abdominal pain or high fever, go straight to emerg and be sure to tell them that you've had WLS recently.  Better safe than sorry!
