Okay when I read this, I smiled...why? because at one of my last Bariatric Support group meeting this guy who is a runner and has a fab body to boot was told by HIS doc that he was obese...occording to the BMI charts. Rich lifted up his shirt and said "SHOW me the fat"???? Needless to say this doc also wasn't really looking at the person, just a number...so how indeed do we see ourselves? Hugs Debbie

Thought for the Day....who are you?

Thought for the Day....who are you?

Okay -- this is a longer than normal thought for the day but stick with me:

Today, my friend Travis Saunders, co-author of the blog Obesity Panacea, recounts his recent experience going to his doctor's. Brief background. Travis? He's stupid fit. He's the guy that makes you shake your head and wonder what kind of crazy crawled into him that makes him run, bike, and ski through sun, rain and snow, day in and day out. He's also an obesity researcher. A good one.

    So what happened with Travis?

The nurse practitioner at his MD's office weighed him, saw that his BMI was nearing 25, and told him he should, "watch his weight" moving forward as he was nearing the "overweight" range.

You see Travis wasn't Travis to the nurse. He was BMI 24.5.

I suspect other folks visiting that nurse weren't Marge, or Bill or Peter, they were BMI 37, BMI 32, and BMI 29.  --

So...the big question for the day is:  Who are you?  Do you see yourself as a person?  Or a number on the scale?

    Hi Debbijean:

You are going to love this:  According to the "obesity paradox"  heart patients with borderline and obese BMIs live longer and have better outcomes than "normal" or underweight patients.

This is music to the ears of this BMI 28.5!!!

Yep and not all thin/skinny/normal size people are healthy. I totally agree!
I hate that BMI chart. It's just a unit of measure and not a very good one at that.

Debbie....this gives me something to ponder. I see myself as a number on the scale and I am not liking me. Really working on it and hope to see myself in a better light soon.

    HUGS...connie d

MY sweet friend Connie, you are so much more than a number on a scale.
Learn to like/love yourself now. No matter what your size is. We can always work on getting our weight off but we have to love ourselves first and be kind to you/us. So just be gentle with yourself and say "I love me just the way I am, but I will work on correcting bad habits and live and make the best choices I can at this time". Why do this? Because YOU are worth it!
    Hugs
    Debbie

Thank you Debbie.....after all I have been through in the last year it is hard for me to love myself right now. I am working on it but the journey is slow.

You are a good friend and I love to hear from you as you always believe in me when I can't believe in myself!!

    Love you....hugs....connie d

Hi Debbie...just had time to read this one from you...so you want to know who I am huh? Well according to OH BMI site I am 26.6 moderatly obese. Nice huh? I am "gaunt" looking so says my sister at Christmas...said "Judy, you need to gain about 10 pounds or so! You are looking gaunt!!! Especially in the face!!!" Well geee thanks sis! Should I have said back to her...."Bonnie, you look so fat! You should lose about 100 pounds!!" But ofcourse I didn't say it becaue i wouldn't hurt her feelings especially since she has been through so much in her last several years and still not doing well at all.

But anyhow back to me being 26.6 BMI Its been a long timme since I was 26.6 BMI and looked this good!!!! AND felt this good!!!!!!!

    HUGS

    You make me smile Judy.
Of course people are going to tell us we look gaunt or too thin...I mean I'm not over 300 pounds anymore and hell...I remember the days when I dieted and got down to 199 I was skinny in my mind....of course then to gain all the weight I lost once more along with some new frineds!
