    I am a month out, and 60 when I had the RNY.  Kicking my butt for waiting so long.  Any advice from you guys?

    I had my surgery last September at age 60.  I have also kicked my self in the arse many times for not doing this before then. 

    It is the best thing that I have ever done, and 80 lbs. lighter, my life has changed completely

    Only advice I can give is stick to the program, and you will do well.  RNY is a wonderful tool!

    Thanks for the welcome and encouragement.  It sure looks good on my glucometer too.  Hopefully my blood sugar levels will stay this low forever!

    Take advantage of your beginning and lose as much weight as you can.  Don't let yourself dehydrate: drink a lot of water.  Start an exercise plan and stick to it.  As you lose more weight, increase your exercise.

    The weight seems to just fall off the first year, but you can increase the amount of weight you lose the frst year or two by exercising.  We all forget that this is only a tool to help you change your way of eating, and then after a few years, when we haven't modified our behaviors, some start gaining again.  Get rid of all the chips, potatoes, or other glidder foods--glidder foods are those foods you can eat and don't hurt your pouch because they go right through the pouch.  Eat meat first, green next.   Use a tiny plate--I use a saucer and I eat with a very small fork.  Never go back for seconds.  Don't drink when you eat and don't ever try sweets.  I am lucky, they make me sick, but some people can eat them.  Oh…when you go out to eat, order healthy and either bring the food home or get use to throwing away a lot of food.  My husband and I share a plate.  We order him the plate that has a 12 oz steak and I try to eat three ounces.  Or we order a steak and shrimp plate and I eat the shrimp.  Otherwise, I throw away three forths of the food.  Good luck.

    Welcome Linda!

    I'm 54 and fast approaching my one year surgiversary.  It has been a wonderful year, full of ups and downs and stalls and incredible WL!  Also, many wonderful friendships here on OFF.  Keep coming back and post daily, so we can get to know you and share in your journey.

    My advice would be to stick with the program that your doctor has prescribed for you, take all your supplements (I still sometimes forget a dose or two!), drink lots of water, and don't try to "test the envelope" on what you can and can't eat.  I call this "don't wake the dragon"!  LOL! 

    My two biggest downfalls were always Cokes and chocolate.  I'm trying very hard to keep those two things OUT of my life forever.  I haven't had a sip of Coke in over a year now and I still miss it.  Some days it feels like a real battle.  So the RNY is a wonderful WL tool, but we still have to make good decisions about our food daily.  That's where this forum will support you and help you the most.

    I had my RNY when I was almost 55 and it has been the best thing I ever did for myself!!!! Lost 170lbs so far and its been a wild ride for sure!! So hang on!!!

       Nice to meet you. I am 61 and 1 year and 1 month out. I lost 33 before surgery and 141 post-op. It's a wonderful new life. It took me a little while to get a routine in place with my new life. Now it's just the way I live each day.     Mag

    Thanks for the warm welcomes.  For my first question, I travel for work.  Any advice on how to handle that?  I will be taking my first business trip in 2 weeks and I am a bit paranoid about it.  My doctor does not advocate protein drinks as he wants you to get into the habit of getting the protein from the food.

    Congrats to all the ladies and their successes.  I hope to be with you soon at goal!

    Will you be back on "regular" food at that point?  Easy toteable high protein snacks are things like cheese sticks and nuts--IF you can eat them at that point.  In restaurants, the appetizer menu sometimes offers things like shrimp ****tail.  I eat boiled shrimp all the time.  You'll probably want to avoid salads for now.  Or if you're still on mushy foods, try the refried beans and guacamole at a Mexican restaurant.  Don't be afraid to order ala carte, or to ask for the kids menu.  Eggs are another good option, if you can handle them.  I never had any problem with eggs, but lots of people do.

    I understand why your doctor discourages the protein drinks, but sometimes a protein drink may be the lesser of two evils, esp. when travelling.  You might consider it as an emergency standby for just a few days while travelling.

    Travel is a challenge always.  Too much fast food out there.

    I added shrimp, fish etc. last week.  Tomorrow I add chicken and turkey, and the following week I add ham an beef.  Great recommendation for Mexican restaurant.  Refried beans are on my list now.  I need to check out things before I eat them away from home.  Cheese sticks.. are a good staple too.

    I have my 1 month follow up tomorrow, I am going to ask about protein bars and drinks when I travel.  Any recommendations on those?

    Again thanks for making me feel at home here.

    Butting in here...the PURE PROTEIN bars are great! about 20 grams of protein and they TASTE GOOD!! Might be different taste to you but worth a try. Also the PURE PROTEIN SHAKES are also good. Not sure if they are available in your area but worth the checking for them.

    I travel five or six times a year and sometimes for a week or two at at time, and I just order shrimp.  I eat more shrimp than anything.  I even buy the bags of shrimp and will boil some for my meal and keep two or three for snack.  I also eat chicken wings.  Beef is really hard.  Keep string cheese and protein bars in your bags.  Travelling can be a pain if you don't stay hydrated, so drink the water.

    As far as traveling, I just came back from Walt Disney World and did OK with the eating.  I carried a few single-serve beef jerkys for a snack, and they can be satisfying and filling.  Also easy to carry and refrigeration not needed.

    I did take a few premade protein drinks, because I was off my normal eating plan.  I also like to get most of my protein from food rather than drinks, but I wanted to make sure I got some protein in for breakfast.  The only drink I can tolerate is the EASAdvantage Carb Control you get from Walmart.  About $5.00 for a 4-pack, 110 calories for 17 g. of protein.  Strawberry and vanilla are OK, but the chocolate is really good.

    The hardest part is throwing away so much food.  We did not have a frig to put leftovers in, so I had to eat my portion and toss the rest.  Some days I split a meal with my girlfriend because one thing Disney offers is a huge portion with each meal. 

    I found it easiest to immediately divy out the portion of food I was going to eat and put the rest aside so it did not tempt me to overeat.

    I lost a few pounds while I was gone, so I guess I did OK.
