When should I go for a plastic surgery consult?

OK- First time post, but am really encouraged reading all of these. I'm only 5 months post bypass, and am down a total of about 100 lbs. At what weight should I seek out a consult? Some have said 15-25 lbs from my goal weight, and others have said not until my goal weight is reached. Looking to see what/when others did, so weigh in(pun intended) with advice!?

Congrats on your loss so far - that's great!

My opinion and the advice I was given was it's important to be at a stable weight for min 3 months but I'd say 6 months. Getting as close to goal is important but it's hard to determine if the goal is reasonable or attainable so I prefer just focusing on stability. Also, make sure you are still following your plan when you stabilize to ensure maximum loss.

For me personally I wanted to get to goal first but despite my best efforts I couldn't get there but was about 15lbs away from it. I had LBL 3.5 weeks ago with 9lbs removed and due to following high protein diet post op I'm now at goal and have a new goal lol. I'm almost 2 years post op RNY. I went for my first consult just after my 1 year follow up.

Good luck!

Things can change a lot in those final 15-25 pounds. And things can shift around once you reach goal too.

But, ultimately, go when you feel you're ready to have the consult. Even if you're not ready for surgery, it's good to get information for planning purposes.

I was at goal for 4 months when I had my consult. On surgery day I will have been in maintenance for 6 months (minus a day). My PS wants people at a stable weight for at least 3 months. The bariatric surgeon suggested waiting a year and a half from WLS surgery, but I got to goal quicker than most of his patients (8.5 months). So I guess the right answer is at a stable weight, at a time that is right for you, and at a point where your PS is okay with operating on you.

I think you can go for a consultation at any time, but my plastic surgeon required me to be at goal for a year before she would do surgery. I talked to her about it long before that so that I could understand what I needed to do. For me it was easy, because she is the one that does my Botox, so they were casual consults during those appointments and didn't cost me anything.

I waited until I was at my goal weight and that my weight was stable. I figured the surgeons would be able to give me the most accurate opinion and quote during my consults. My surgeon said it it important after the surgery to try and maintain right around the same weight, because a larger gain/loss does affect the results.
