I wrote this in 2004 The Old Mans Garden For my entire life it was there A beautiful vegetable garden, brimming with life He was there too, weeding and tending An old man, but young in his labors Every year tilling the soil and harvesting natures bounty Corn and Squash Tomatoes and Beans A Pumpkin patch He would sell some of the extra produce to supplement his retirement Last year the garden was thriving in the spring Full of promise Around the Fourth of July I started to notice weeds No pumpkins at Halloween Today it is just a large patch of weeds The sign in front of the house said "Estate Sale" I stopped and bought the old mans hoe I never knew his name
