Fear of failure

Happy Friday...

So this is something that has been weighing heavily on my mind. I KNOW WLS is a tool - it needs to be used properly. But all I can think of is the times I have "dieted" and exercised and still not lost weight. Since I have had my daughter (she is 2) it has been so difficult to lose weight. Prior to having my daughter I lost weight (close to 100lbs and I had kept it off until I got pregnant) And believe me, the efforts are there. I have noticed some issues - my thyroid is borderline "hypo" but my doctor will not treat it yet. And my cortisol levels fluctuate quite a bit and are often high. I am sure that these things work against my efforts. But I feel like I should be seeing better results.

All I keep thinking about is what if I do this and do all the right things and NOTHING changes. Is that possible?? Did anyone else have the same fears? I am talking about the people who have the surgery and don't change their habits. Maybe this is just some anxiety as the process continues and I get closer.

I was very worried about not being successful with RNY after 'failing' with the LapBand.  But they are very different surgeries and I'm re-committing.  With the band I got to the point where I could not eat most of the food I should have been eating (like solid proteins) because I would just go yak it right back up.  From everything I've heard, while there are foods that some people's RNY pouches don't like, it's not the same as with the band.  No more being so tight in the morning that coffee won't even go down and then so loose at night that I'm HUNGRY for everything but the kitchen sink.

I'm still early on, but I feel optimistic about the process now that I've attending some of the support group meetings with the surgeon I chose for revision.  There is a lot of encouragement regarding this not being brain surgery and the things we need to do to deal with the emotional and head issues we have with eating.

A counselor of some type might be in your future if you feel like you won't have a good enough handle on your habits long term.  We can only do our best.

I understand completely.  I am going in for my revision surgery tomorrow (RNY)  I had my band out and it took a while for me not to blame myself for it's failure.  I tried for two years after it slipped to get back on track and it just didn't work.

Good luck to you and you are headed on the right path.  Information and support helps tons.

have the band fail after pregnancy is a very common thing.  I'm surprised no one had done a study about it.  My band worked fine until I got pregnant and then things got haywire.  restriction issues/reflux.  defils and then it just broke.  it is the band not you.  I ready a story where a woman had 6 revisions/replacement bands...everytime she got pregnant (3) she needed a new band.

what they don't generally tell you is that once you start having problems a replacement band will not likely work.  I ended up 30lbs heavier than my preband weight.  I'm down 74lbs (4.5 months post op).  I'm within about 10lbs of my pre pregnancy band maintenance weight from 10 years ago.    My results have been pretty fast and from what I understand not very common but there is light at the end of the tunnel.  I have a friend who was revised one day after me and she has thyroid issues.  she is still down over 60lbs at this point.
