Topic: RE: In need of informed, constructive words -- Puttin' It ALL out there
Roslin was one of them.  I've known him for 10yrs as I had my initial surgery at Lenox Hill.  Look, all I am saying is that everyone on this board hears FAILED BAND, FAILED RNY --> DS!  There are other options.  That is all I said to her initially.  Why don't you jump all over the person who said "all you'll lose with a band" is 25lbs.  I'm done. I'll go back to the civilized board (LapBand and Main Board).

I am basing this on me and a conversation I had with 3 different surgeons in NYC, all who do DS, and they said, that it is very tricky and not easy when you have had an OPEN Rny.  While I never "entertained" a DS (although it is covered with my medical plan), I did ask them to tell me about all revision options and the pros and cons of each.  I don't speak out my ass.  I've been on and off these boards for 10 yrs.  I live in NYC and have access to the finest doctors in the world.  I wasnt going to do this TWICE without asking questions.

Do all you DS people realize that an open RNY to a DS is virtually impossible?
Topic: RE: In need of informed, constructive words -- Puttin' It ALL out there
Email me offline bc this board, the revision one especially, pushes DS like a drug dealer feeding your crack cocaine. I had a RNY in 2002, went from 305 to 175. I was. Good till 2008 when I hurt my back running, bulging discs, and gained back to 246.6. I had the band over bypass on June 23rd and I am doing great. I have restriction again for the first time in years and I'm not hungry. I've just about 30lbs. I go in for my 2nd fill on Monday. The surgery is safe, was easy, and recovery was quick.

Topic: RE: New to board RNY to BOB (probably) or DS (I wish)
I know a few dozen bobsters on here, you can check out the lap band forumn. My one suggestion, your surgery is personal to you. Make the decision after researching all options and what is best for you and your family. While I know you may only be joking "vote" pls don't let me or anyone else persuade you into anything until you have done your research. Also, pls check to se what your insurance company covers as that will dictate a lot. Good luck.
Topic: RE: New to board RNY to BOB (probably) or DS (I wish)
Hi. I am a BOBster. I had my RNY in 2002, lost 130 lbs, gained back 65 and decided to research a revision. Wanted a Band,  too scared of all the complications to do a revision and didnt want any part of a DS, major surgery, stomach removal, etc.  Plus, I only have/had 65lbs to lose.

I have my Band put in on 6/23. 1 day procedure, walked home next day. Im down 26lbs, I feel great. I know Dr. Roslin, he was going to do my Band but (at the time) Lenox Hill wasnt a bariatic center of excellance with Aetna.  Instead, I used Dr. Kurian at NYU, Al Rokers surgery.  I love Dr Roslin, as I've known him close to 10 yrs (had RNY at Lenox Hill yrs ago).  Make the decision that is right for you.  Dont let all these DSers scare you and push you towards a DS. Talk to a dtr and see if a RNY-RNY is right or a RNY-Band will work.  For me, and many others, a RNY to a DS is a very dangerous procedure (my RNY was open).

Good Luck.

Topic: RE: band over bypass
KareN, I cannot believe I had surgery less than a month ago bc my life is NORMAL! I have my first fill tomorrow at 10am, nervous, excited, curious! I haven't lost anything in like 10 days but I don't think I am eating enough. NOT hungry at Ll, at bc I should. I don't know about others but I have restriction for the first time in years. Also I hope go get clearance to go back to the gym tomorrow, no weights but more than walking.
Topic: RE: band over bypass
Hi Karen, I had a BOB last month, June 23rd. I had the RNY in 2002 and went from 305 to 175 and in the last 4 yrs I've put back on 65lbs. I too had a stretched out pouch but didn't want to risk a full revision and bc I didn't have a lot to lose, thought the band was a great option. I was looking for restriction again and I have found it. Om down about 22lbs. The weight loss is very slow, 1- 2 lbs per week, but that's great. I took the weight loss from the RNY for granted. My surgery was about 1.5hrs and iwas in and out in less than 24hrs. Pls feel fre to email me with any questions. My profile is fairly up to date.

Topic: RE: found out I have a fistula
When I had my ct scan with and without contrast, you can see contrast on both sides of my staples line.  My surgeon said its my nromal bc if i was just post-op, I'd be sick.  I gained weight bc my pouch is soooooo stretched out that it is pre-RNY size.  I chose the band bc I only wanted to lose 60-70 lbs and I wanted restriction back. Plus, I didnt want a DS, too invasive, to major of a surgery and I didnt want my entire stomach removed. I also am a volume eater, not a snacker, so, it would work well for me.  I also considered a revision of my RNY, but, didnt want a 6-8 hours surgery and the potential 10% death rate and 20-30% complication rate and that is the norm. I would have used the best in the country, if not the world, Mitchell Roslin, but still didnt want to chance it.

Topic: RE: Denied Again. Help!!! Need official Appeal Letter
Have you taken a step back to get a copy of your policy and se what it covers and what the requirements are? If you haven't you should bc all you're doing is spinning wheels. Pull it and then do what it says. If you have to do a diet before a decision is made DO IT. Roslin's office will help you but you need to know what your insurance policy says, word for word.
Topic: RE: found out I have a fistula
Hi. I had the RNY in 2002 and just got banded 3 wks ago (BOB - band over bypass). I too had a fistula but it didn't need to be repaired as it was "my normal". Ive been pretty good with uodating my profile this time as well so pls let me know if you had any questions. I went from 305 to 175 in 2 yrs, kept off the weight till 2007 and in the last 2-3 yrs put on the weight. I was 246.6 day of surgery (6/33) and today I'm 226. I have my first fill next week. I have restriction again for the first time in 5 yrs.

Topic: RE: Rny to Lap Band; Do u Lose Weight as fast?
Hey Sammy.  How are you?  Im a little over a week too, I guess 10 days now.  Im down a little over 20lbs and feeling good.  Today my stomach hurts a lot and I am not sure if its bc Im hungry or its actual pain.  All I've eaten today is 1 shake, 1 greek yogurt and some chicken I pureed.  Today was the 1st time I think I felt the restriction when i ate the chicken.  After a maybe a 1/2 cup, I felt full and tight.  I am not really sure why bc I have like nothing in my band.

Saturday I hurt a lot but I overdid it on the exercise, I walked like 3-4mi and was very sore.  Today, it just hurts in my stomach, like a cramp.  I took some tylenol with codeine and it doesnt seem to help which makes me think its food pains ???

I saw my dtr last Friday the 1st, actually my dr is on vaka, so, I saw the nurse.  He checked the incisions, took off the bandages, weighed me and moved me to pureed which was great bc I was supposed to do a full 10 days of liquids. I missed chewing.  Im on pureed for 10 days, so, I guess thats till the 11th then I go to regular food.  Which is good bc I have a business trip to Boston on the 14th.  I did try my 1st glass of wine on Sat night I so miss wine.

I dont think it will be super hard to lose once we are on real foods, I think it maybe easier, well, once they find the right amount of fill. I say that bc right now, I am not eating/drinking enough. Only like 800 cal and I know from the RNY that the more you eat, the more protein you get in, that you lose.  I think if I have a consistent 1000-1200 cal per day and 60g of protein, i will lose.  And right now, Im not gettign that much and as much as I dont get it, you need to eat to lose.  Plus the exercise will help. I've been walking the dogs a lot, a few miles a day and today I went back to the gym.  Treadmill only but I think it is key. Even if its only 30 min a day this week, next week 45min and then advance to an hr.

Keep in touch.

OMG Teena Adler, I remember you. Do you remember me? I hope you are ok, I'm going to read the blog. Sending good thoughts your way.
Topic: RE: Rny to Lap Band; Do u Lose Weight as fast?
It depends on your doctor. The liquid diet Pre-op shrinks your liver and de-fats the organ. Plus since the lap band is done lap, it makes it easier. Remember we have excess scar tissue from the RNY.

I had to do 2 wks of liquids, I was also allowed soup and veggies, non-starchy ones. It was a rough 2 wks. After surgery, I'm on 10 days of liquids then 10 days of pureed (which start the 4th thank god) and then regular food. My first fill is the 20th.

I'm hear for you. Hit me up after the dtr appt.
Topic: RE: Rny to Lap Band; Do u Lose Weight as fast?
Charmaine, our stories are a lot alike.  Let me know how it goes and feel free to email me with anything.

Just an FYI, I've only lost 5lbs since surgery last Thursday the 23rd. I lost 12lbs in the 2 weeks prior with the pre-op all liquids diet. I had to do 2 wks of liquids before the surgery and now I am on 10 days of liquids after. I switch to pureed food on the 4th and then all regular food on the 14th.

Regardless, 17.6 lbs in 3 wks is awesome by all counts and I am thrilled. My goal is to be back at 175 which would mean I need to lose another 54lbs and they say 1-2lbs a week with the lap band so my goal is to do that my New Years Eve!

Good Luck, keep us updated.

Topic: RE: Question about 1st appointment for revision
You say exactly what you are saying to us here.  If this is a new dtr, I'd bring your pre-op records and also some other records about your post-op care, history and weight loss.  The dtr will probably refer you for an endoscopy or upper GI and maybe a CT Scan of the Abdomen. That will tell him/her a lot and will be able to shed light as to if there is anything anatomically wrong.

Good Luck.

Shavonne, I remember you from back in the day!  Hey girl, how are you.  I just did a Band-over-Byapss last week. I went form 305 to 175 and back up to 246. I am at 229 this morning.  Good Luck sweety!
Topic: RE: Almost there........................
The CT scan shows a lot.  Roslin referred me to get it.  Its his way of knowing what he is getting himself into before the surgery. For me, it revealed a loarge pouch and a fistual, hernia too.  Endoscopy confirmed the pouch size.  I think it also shows him scar tissue.
Topic: RE: Rny to Lap Band; Do u Lose Weight as fast?
I had my RNY in 8/2002, I went from 305 to 175, had Plastics twice and went from a 26/28 to a 10.  I was fine untiul 2008, I hurt by back running, bulging discs and the weight came back on. I had an endoscopy and ct scan in feb, my pouch was huge, stretched back out so nothing I could do was gonna work....I tried the pouch test and almost died.  I considered an RNY revision, no way.  Too much risk plus, all I needed to lose was 65lbs. So, I opted for the Band over Bypass. I was 246.6 and am now 229.2, I had surgery last Thursday the 23rd, I also had a hernia repair.

I am not hungry right now but that is due to the stomach being swollen.  I am looking forward to restriction for the first time in years.  BOBs are great options for RNY's bc we will get that restriction back and yes it is slow, but, slow is fine, I took the weight loss for granted when it just fell off with the RNY.

Hi.  I dont think it is as fast.  You can do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and lose wieght with the RNY.  I mean, I lost 100lbs in the 1st 6 mos.  I just was Banded last week, the 23rd, and fromt he pre-op diet till now, I am down close to 18lbs.  yes, its slower, think "diet" but I think it is a better tool at least for me who once had an RNY and took it for granted.

Topic: RE: RNY revision possibilities
The best Bariatric doctor in the US is in NYC, Dr. Mitchell Roslin.  Check him out. His number is 212.434.3285 http://www.nycbariatrics.com/default.  He isnt my doctor but have known him for 10yrs. He is/was in the practice with my original RNY doctor and I saw him for my revision.  He does everything possible and is world reknown.
Topic: RE: Everyone thinking about a revision needs to watch this presentation.
I watched it but not sure why revision candidates need to especially watch it. I think its more important for a Pre- op to watch to know that they may fail regardless. But, anyhow thanks for posting. Vie known Roslin for 10yrs, he's the best surgeon in the US.
