About Dr. John D. Husted

Dr. John HustedDr. Husted has made surgery for the treatment of obesity his professional focus, and is considered an expert and leader in the field. With a decade of experience, he has performed the full spectrum of bariatric procedures available in the U.S., including revision/conversion procedures for failed or otherwise complicated previous bariatric operations. He has been featured on The Discovery Channel in two specials: "Kathy's Story", showing one woman's journey with a Duodenal Switch procedure, and "Big John", focusing on adolescent obesity. He has been invited to lecture for various national and local professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons, for whom he was also invited to demonstrate his technique of Duodenal Switch in a live telesurgery format. Prior to relocating back to San Francisco in 2006, he had served as Medical Director for Bariatric Services at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, TN, and as Medical Director and co-founder of the Metabolic Surgery Center at Baptist Hospital as well. He continues his focus on bariatric surgery, including his special interest in revision/conversion surgery. He is an active committee member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS), and serves as the Physician Advisor for the Walk From Obesity. In addition, he is a member of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO), the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), the DS Institute, the American Nutraceutical Association (ANA), the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), the Tennessee Medical Association (TMA), and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

A native Californian and third generation physician, Dr. Husted received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1984, and his M.D. degree from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1988. He completed his internship and residency training in general surgery at UCSF and the University of Arizona. He is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Surgery.
