Elevated liver enzymes

cschoen

For the second time in the past 5-6 months, by blood work cam back with a result that my liver enzymes were elevated.  Last time my surgeon had me go for additional tests (can't remember what they were) but everything came back fine.  My GP (who takes my blood - she is the ONLY one I want to do that any more - everyone else gives my hematomas the size of baseballs and the color of basketballs, and I have to watch her when she slides the needle in since I don't feel anything when she does it!) left me a message that she wants the test repeated in 2 months, and until then, I can't even take Tylenol.

I did some research this evening and found out
(1) this is not an uncommon occurence
(2) it could possibly be related to getting too much protein (since the time the first tests were taken till today, I only averaged about 100g protein a day, but since May 1, it's more like 110 g a day.
and
(3) one article mentioned a possible thiamine deficiency

Has anyone else had this issue?  Does anyone have any addition insight into what causes it?

Thanks.  (I'm not too concerned - yet....)

Hello,

Yes, mine are elevated too. Both surgeon and PCP have taken what seems like gallons of blood for testing. All other tests are great, I feel good, they will repeat this in a couple of months.

Neither doctor had an answer as to the cause. If the tests don't improve they will send me to a specialist.

Like you, I am not too concerned ...YET.

My liver enzymes were slightly elevated last time, and my pcp wasn't overly concerned.  He's going to repeat the bloodwork at my next appt, so until then, I refuse to worry.  I have wondered what causes this, but I see plenty of people here with this issue.  If my next test comes out elevated, I'll start to be concerned and do more research.  The one thing I've never thought much about until now are liver enzymes.

Hugs,

Annette

I too am a victim of elevated liver funcion... my mom (who is a nurse) said if you are at all dehydrated sometimes that can cause it.. now I know we all drink a million times a day but if you had this test early in the morning perhaps that contributed?

Interesting point (along with the others here.)  I always go in the morning for my blood tests and have to fast from 12 midnight the night before.  However, tit's only been the last two tests....

Still waiting for my PCP to get the results faxed to the surgeon - it takes forever!

My surgeon just called me last night concerned with my liver enzymes.  He wants me to go to my PCP for additional testing.  It makes me a  little less concerned that this is a common occurence.

For years pre-op both my levels were elevated - since surgery two years ago one level dropped back to normal (too****il about 1 year out) and the other level has SLOWLY been decreasing but is still high.
Neither my PCP nor surgeon thinks its a big deal - pre-op I had a ton of tests, ultrasound blah blah blah and everything was fine except my liver was fat (hehe).... surgeon told me last time I saw him it could take quite some time for my liver to 'recover' especially since it was so high for years and years.

If you want to comapre levels send me a message and I will look up my bloodwork when I get home - I have copies of everything and my last test was Feb.

First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5
Total lost - 143   Since surgery - 107!

Goal weight - 155
Current weight - 145 ~ bmi 22.7
Holding steady at 145 since Feb 2008!

Elevated liver tests can be a result of losing a large amount of weight in a short period of time.  You are right not to be concerned right now.

From what I understand, elevated liver enzymes are quite common for us because the liver processes the fat we're burning off, and within a year of stopping the weight loss they should return to normal.

Thanks.  Talked to the surgeon today.  He also doesn't think it's anything, but he wants me to go to an gastroenterologist just to be on the safe side.
