This is for newbies like me and people who may have had surgery a while ago but haven't had the opportunity to discuss expectations.  Nobody really talked to me beforehand about what to expect for progression for my weight loss.

My surgeon reiterated for my yesterday what I have long observed about weight loss (and in general progress on anything I do in life).  It's episodic.  You lose a little, you pause, you lose a little more.  It is NOT a straight line.  If there are people out there who lose at a steady rate all the way to goal, more power to them, but I believe they are the exception not the rule.  The normal state of affairs is losing some, pausing, and then losing some more.  That's even if you are doing everything right.  That's even if you are doing the maximum you should be doing to lose weight.

If you start out with unrealistic expectations, you are going to terrify yourself and make yourself miserable every time your body "pauses" as you are going forward.  It's avoidable stress.

I know there are folks out there who hit genuine walls and are needing and looking to make adjustments to their eating, their nutrition, their exercise, whereever those adjustments need to be made to get them going again.  That's real too.  But I don't think those type of plateaus are the same thing as the normal, expectable staggered pace of ordinary weight loss.  It's kind of like the difference between a momentary "blah" mood we all have, and depression.  Everyone feels blah at some point in their day, or at least is not having a peak experience.  But depression is a disorder that needs to be treated.

I know this journey is scary.  I get scared too.  I'm scared right now.  It's hard to get your hopes up after years of failure and losing faith with yourself, at least so i find it.  It's so easy to believe the other shoe is gonna come down any minute.  So I'm saying this in the spirit of comfort, not correction.  Unless you are grazing all day and eating stuff you know you should not be eating, YOUR WLS WILL WORK.  it WILL work.  sometimes, quickly, sometimes slowly.  but it's definitely delayed gratification.

Thank you. I very much needed to hear this today. I was having a “down day” feeling like a failure and a slow loser. I just needed to hear that the rest of it will come off eventually, if I just keep plugging along.

Yep, I've only lost a pound in the last two weeks... but clothes that I couldn't button two weeks ago now fit... hmmm... So, who cares, it will come off eventually it has to!

Thanks I needed that too!  I haven't really lost anything in the past week, but I know that I'm doing everything right but just needed to be reminded that everyone stalls and that it will pick up again at any point!

It is my hope that EVERY Pre~op Newbie reads this statement and takes it to heart!

I'm six weeks out and I'm down a total of 41 pounds (6 lost pre-op and 35 lost since surgery).  After surgery I became almost obsessed with dropping weight quickly, as I lost several pounds immediately then almost a pound or two a day until about 2 weeks ago.

It was torture looking at the scale and seeing the same number for a week and a half. I don't know what happened to me, I just got so OBSESSED with wanting to see that number change! But then I realized that I had dropped about 3 clothing sizes and was steadily losing inches! I bought some nice fitting jeans and a new top and went out dancing with my hubby and friends.

After a weekend of dancing, my scale was 5 pounds lower on Monday morning! What a great and uplifting way to lose weight! I amazed my hubby and friends who commented on how I was "glowing" and seemed so full of life and "vitality."

Yes, you're right this whole thing is scary. And I can't even imagine where I'll be in another 6 weeks or 6 months... or 6 years! But I do know one thing: I feel GREAT! And the feeling I got wearing a pair of jeans in a size I haven't seen in at least 5 years was incredible.

I'm thinking now that dancing is the way to go for me: Samba lessons, anyone?

Hi. First off congrats on your surgery.  I had my RNY oct. 2007. i lost 66 lbs in the first six months.  i am almost 2 yrs out now and have not lost a lb since feb. of 2008.  I have been at my current weight this whole time i have no idea what i did or am doing wrong.  I feel a heck of a lot better then before but i really wanted and expected to loose a lot more.  good luck and keep up the good work. i wish i could.

i understand this does happen and absolutely wanted to acknowledge that there's a big difference between a true plateau or stall and just hitting those steps along the way.  what have you done to try to break the plateau?  there are so many good brains here and so much experience, i don't know if you've discussed it already and are sick of trying, but i'd sure like to see you get the help you need.

thanks, at first i tried everything, i even did the liquid diet for a week and nothing. i exercise for 1 1/2 hours twice a day 5 days a week for a month straight and nothing.  i kept a food journal and took it to my doctor, he says i wasn't eating enough.  how do anerexics loose weight then?? i got so frustrated i quit trying.  I think i will find some meetings around town and start going. see what they can tell me.  Thanks again

which doctor did you show it to, your surgeon?  have you seen a good bariatric nutrionist at all?  just wondering... you might try posting your menus here on one of the daily threads, and discussing the different things you've tried.  i know it's frustrating, i've been there most of my life, i would be super frustrated post-op to be dealing with it, but you never know.  what kind of meetings - bariatric support?  OA?

Thank you for saying what needs to be said for us new ones out here. I am seeing all kinds of posts of people that have had surgery right around my time or a week or so after and they are already totally disgusted that they havent lost major weight?(I am 4+wks out??6/29/2009 RNY).

Personally I want to lose at a little slower pace. To give my body and health time to catch up with each loss downward. And I am working out at the Gym Now, not in a year, so that I will build and keep muscle, instead of losing it and then having a harder time getting the leftover FLAB into shape if I did wait a year.

I just keep thinking positively like yourself. THis will work. It cant not work! It was designed to work and there have been too many successes for it not do what it is supposed to do!
Free us from the former  self and the weight problem we had.

Thanks again for sharing! Made my day!

I had a 2 week stall at 5 weeks where I lost nothing.  I'm just finishing (hopefully) another 2 week stall at 5 months.  I'm finally down a pound today, so I hope the slope is downward again.

I feel like I hold the land speed record for stalls.  I stalled on day 8 after surgery for 11 days.  As soon as I advanced to soft/mushy food my body was like "ok she really isn't trying to starve herself to death" and is now letting go of the weight again.  I have accepted that stalls are a way of life, but it was hard  to accept since even back in my old dieting days I rarely if ever hit a plateau.  Mind you I worked out a whole lot more than I currently can being just three weeks out of surgery.
